IFC exploding

Hi!

While searching the internet I cannot get a definitive answer.

Can you import IFC from another software to Revit and then dismantle it (explode) to start manipulating IFC elements as Revit elements and change them or at least assign materials or colours to them or something.

I have a IFC file of a roof construction done in framing software, but when I link it in Revit project it is all grey and I cannot do anything with this linked model. No way to explode the link to have this model as a bunch of Revit elements?

Can it be done?

Are you able to Link it, Bind it and Ungroup it inside a Revit Project?  

But before all that, can you TAB-Select to cycle to and select elements within the IFC to determine what the IFCMaterial is?

I went to my Revit project. To Insert menu Link IFC and selected my ifc file. It is now in my Revit model, but I cannot do anything with it only movie it around. But other things you mentioned I do not know how to do :). So I do not know if I am able to bind or ungroup it. A beginner still :).

Select the IFC and look on the Contextual Tab. Do you see Bind?  

Hover over the IFC and press TAB key. Do elements within the IFC highlight? 

Also, can you  apply Custom graphic overrides to the IFC elements  through the Revit Links tab in the View Visibility and Graphics Overrides? 

...actually, why don't you post your IFC here and let me see what your working with.

No I do not think I have bind option nor can I override graphics.

I can thou select elements separately with tab, but cannot do anything with them also.

And just in case I use Revit LT 2021.

If you can cycle and select, then you should be able to read the properties to see what Project Material it is using. 

Post the IFC here as an Attachment to a Reply Post. 

...are there Properties being shown for that rafter you have selected in the 3rd Screenshot?

Yes there are some properties for every detail. They are correct properties that come from this framing software.

I don't know what the deal is on your end, but I can Bind it, and I can apply Element and Category Graphic Overrides to it.   Pretty much everything I suggested above works.

Open the IFC in Revit directly using File > Open > IFC menu.  Change materials and save as a Revit file and link that file to your model.

Are you saying that you don't see this "Bind Link" button when you select the IFC Link in the Project?

...or have any of these VGOs?

Nope, none of those. Maybe Revit LT does not have this functionality then.

Thanks. This might work. I can move around these elements and change generic model patterns for consistent colours view, but could not find yet where I can change materials for them. These elements seem to have less functionality. I will try a bit more later.

I don't think that it works.

If I open ifc it comes as bunch of generic models.

Only places where I can set something is in VG and object styles.

In VG I can change colour of generic models for consistent colours view and

in object styles I can change line colours and assign material to generic models, but doing that from there does not have any effect in realistic view or any other view for that matter.

In realistic it stays dark grey. Only thing that changes in realistic is line colour if I change it from object styles.

I do not see any other parameters that let me assign material.

Don't you have "Edit In-Place" showing on the Contextual Tab when you select the IFC Component after Opening IFC as a separate Project?  

...also, don't you have a bunch of "IFCSurfaceStyle..." Materials listed in the Material Browser?

Edit in place is greyed out. Do not see model in place for these generic models.

BUT...

I do have ifc materials in material browser. If I add a texture image to those materials or change colour then it WORKS! And then linking rvt file to an actual project.

This has been made a lot harder and inconvenient than it should be, but at least its something.

Revit LT is probably stripped of some functions that would have made it a bit easier.

I have IFC models and I am trying to explode to edit them but seems not possible. I read the other users' problem and I am not able to select the elements of my model separately. My model are originally in OBJ format that I have exported them as IFC.

Revit doesn't have explode like AutoCAD. Is that what you mean?  Also, how are you opening the IFC?  File=>Open IFC?
