IFC exchange Revit ⮀ ARCHICAD

Hi everyone,

My co-worker and I are researching the IFC exchange between Revit and ARCHICAD. We did a few tests, first a model from Revit to IFC to ARCHICAD, and second a model from ARCHICAD to IFC to Revit. We found some differences/problems and hope you can help us. Below this post we provided an example/summary of the problems we have encountered. Upon request we can provide you with a full report with similar discoveries.

Revit → IFC → ARCHICAD

  1. The kitchen disappeared (Casework) (images #2)
  2. The position of the Wall Location Line has changed from center to the exterior side of the wall

 ARCHICAD → IFC → Revit

  1. Walls became disjoined from roof and other walls (images #3)
  2. The position of the Wall Location Line has changed from center to the exterior side of the wall

Ultimately we hope you can point us in the direction towards someone who can give us feedback on the report and possibly knows how to get this under the attention by Autodesk.

Not sure what you mean by Archicad  > IFC > Revit. Do you mean you are trying to convert an Archicad to IFC and then try to import IFC to Revit as native Revit elements? If that is the case then you are trying to do something that IFC is never meant to be used for.

IFC are meant to be used to get a 3D Cad model into an open BIM format that can be read by different programs (used as an underlay). It is not meant as a conversion format between different modeller programs. So even that Revit can convert some IFC elements back to native Revit elements the use will be limited. So see IFC as an export format not as an intermediary format. IFCs are dependent on both the source and the destination software how the IFC will show up. Some description in the IFC standard are in a gray area and might be differently interpreted by the different software manufacturers. You can see this while using different IFC viewers.

Sometimes it also depends on the settings the users makes during im/export. For example maybe you have a setting that did not export the casework or that it did not import it. In general it is also the case that only the 3d geometry is exported, no the 2D elements. While they can be exported by some programs a lot of the programs/IFC viewers does not handle the 2D elements and are ignored when found in the IFC file.

You will have to look at the import and the export side and check with different viewers what the results will be.

There is active development on IFC export from Revit. Check out the GitHub pages, where you can look for reported issues and report bugs.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

I think archicad is more good because it's easy and user friendly
