Revit will only let me open one file at a time and closes any other file if i open a different one. I don't have the tabs at the top that allow you to flip through different windows either.

Are they closed or are they just behind the active window?  Do you get a warning that they will be closed?

Revit 2017 does not have tabs.  You can CTRL+TAB and CTRL+ SHIFT+TAB, or go to View ? Switch Window button, to switch windows back and forth.

No warning message about closing multiple files. Revit only has one file open at all times, they aren't hiding behind each other because if they were it would show multiple revit files on the revit tab on my computer taskbar

Revit ain't show multiple previews on the windows taskbar.  Have you tried the key combinations or the ribbon menu that i suggested?

Revit will close a project if the project you have open is linked into the project you are trying to open.  If this is the case you can get by this opening up multiple sessions of Revit.
