How to wrap door around curve

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello, i am making small garden domes and i don't want to put the dome higher just to make the door fit as I'd like it to have a cosy feel. So, I can't figure out how to curve the top of the door to make it fit onto the shape of the dome. It currently sticks out and i would like it to curve into it if that makes sense.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

You need to model it that way.

...unfortunately, this is a custom job...just as in real life.  There are no isle with curved doors in it at Home Depot, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the reply. Could you explain a little more as I am still new at
using revit? How can I model it like that?

Thank you!

You can model it as a Loadable Family or an In-Place Component.  Sweeps and Extrusions will be your primary modeling tools.  However, you could build a vestibule with vertical walls to host a "regular" door. Kind of Igloo-like structure.

I'm still confused about the extrude and sweep tools.. so do i need to remake the dome using them so the door fits into it automatically or do you mean model the door?

thank you.

You need to think about how it is going to be built in the real world first. Eventually, you going to have to take this concept to plan set so that someone can actually build it.  This is probably how the Eskimos came up with the vestibule. It was the only way they could think of to be able to put a conventional swing door in a dome.

model the door family with a dome segment on top that match your domed wall/roof.

How about a revolving door? Revit has got one. Door-Exterior-Revolving-Full Glass-Metal.

Yes I agree with you and that was my initial plan but when I saw this (see attached photos) I was really inspired and wanted the door to be a part of the structure like in that. My friend visited this place and told me the doors would slide into the sides

That's a neat idea.  Outdoor dining; year-round in any weather.

I can think of couple of approaches to modeling this. I wouldn't use Curtain Wall or System though. I don't know what approach you used to create yours, but I think the glass portion - and doors - could be created by applying a Basic Wall Type (just glass) to the Faces of Domed Masses.  The Beam tool could be used to create the curved struts.

How did you build yours?  You can post it here if you like.

So I decided to do the mass method then adding wall to the face which was looking good but when I added the door it still the did the same thing unfortunately 😞 I added windows just to demonstrate that the doors/windows or anything i add to the wall sticks out and not go with the shape. I've tried to edit door type and see if it allows me to curve the actual door so that it curves round but I couldnt find anything...

Heres the outcome of the mass method:

I think you misunderstood me.  I was referring to sliding-glass doors (as you mentioned) created by applying glass to a domed-shaped mass using Wall by Mass Face tool.  The 2 door panels shown in this photo are created in this manner. The Mass Faces they are applied are inset enough to give adequate clearance to slide the doors to an open position.

This is what I meant by said "Igloo-like".  The OP could then use a conventional door.
