How to show 2nd floor columns in 1st floor?

Hi, how can i have all columns from 2nd floor to show onto 1st floor? (see attachment)

Pick one:

1. Turn on Underlay.  The columns will show but so will other items from the upper level such as walls, doors, etc... if you don't turn them off from V/G.

2. Create a view of the upper level and turn off everything except for columns.  Then overlay it and your lower level view on the same place on sheet.

3. Edit the column family and add a model line from the base down so that the columns from the upper level will be cut by the lower view cut plane.

I usually use the Underlay tool on the Properties window. Remain on the floor (First Floor Plan) where you need to show desired floor's column (Second Floor Plan). Change the range: Base level to Second floor (in your case) and make sure the underlay orientation is 'Look Down'. Apply the setting. If you need that for temporary use or for reference that would work. But if you want that to show while you undo the underlay you can use the Lineweight (LW shortcut) and apply thin/medium/wide line to the columns and remove the underlay. Hope that works.

Thanks, option #2 works for me. just one problem i have is that the view with only columns i did in halftone and when i overlay it it's over ride my other views setting which is not in halftone. is there an option of sending it to back or something else?

How about change the order of placing the views on sheet.  Place the halftone view first then the main view.

I would use the floor plan with columns as underlay on the floor plan where you want that columns. That way your columns will halftone itself while maintaining the normal visibility graphics to the other floor plan, the floor plan you are working on. If you understood what I mentioned in my earlier post/comment about the way how I do that.

How do you not show other elements that are not columns on the Underlay?

What about setting the underlay and then using linework tool on the columns and then turning off the underlay? This will leave the lines created by linework tool behind.  The lines will also be connected to the underlying column, so changes would be picked up if they move or change.

Thanks it works, but i am having a hard time to select the first (halftone) viewport to activate it because it's only picking the top one.

Use Tab until the target viewport is highlighted.

Hi, now with the idea of overlaying viewports how do i show walls from 3rd floor on 2nd floor but only the "structural walls " not all walls?

I believe if you set the overlaying view's Discipline to Structural then the Architectural walls will not show.
