HOW TO SHARE A FAMILY IN MULTIPLE NESTED FAMILIES

Hello,

I am currently trying to tag a soap dispenser in my project but the dispenser family was put into a family then into another family and then into the project.

i.e. soap dispenser geometry (base family) -> plumbing soap dispenser (middle family) -> counter top with fixtures (final family) -> project

how do i share this family with my project so i can tab through the family and tag it?

The soap dispenser family would need to be "shared". Meaning that you need to find that family, go to Category and Parameters, activated the Shared property, and load this family into others again. Then you'll be able to select the soap dispenser and tag it.

SO I ONLY DO THIS TO THE BASE FAMILY AND THEN IT SHOULD BE FINE? OR DO I NEED TO DO IT TO EACH FAMILY AS I LOAD IT BACK IN?

IT FOR SOME REASON IS ALSO OVERRIDING THE VISIBILITY PARAMETER I MADE FOR IT.

Only to the components that you want to be able to select, tag, schedule, even if they are nested into a host.

Is your visibility parameter a type parameter?

Shared families can only have instance parameters linked into their host.

The reasoning is that shared families can be nested into more than  just one host family. This means with type parameters you would have conflicts like the following:

  1. shared family nested into host family 1 with type parameter linked to host family 1 parameter.
  2. shared family nested into host family 2 with type parameter linked to host family 2 parameter.
  3. you change host family 1 parameter which updates shared family linked parameter.
  4. What is supposed to happen to host family 2 that is also linked to this same type parameter?
