How to determine the material which has been painted on a stair

I am trying to use the remove paint command to hover over these stairs and determine what material has been painted on them although it hasn't been working. I am able to hover over other walls/surfaces in the model and determine the material but it doesn't seem to be working for the stair treads. Does anyone have an alternative method for determining material or know why this isn't working for the stairs?

It works the same way for stairs. Maybe they aren't Painted. Maybe the color is coming from the Material assigned to the Treads.

Is it possible to paint stair treads/risers? I can assign a material the way @barthbradley showed, and I can paint stringers & railings but not treads/risers.

You should be able to. What version of Revit are you using?

I just tested it in the project I was working on and it didn't work. It's an old one that has been upgraded from Revit 2010 so I'm going to blame that. I can do it when I start a new project.

I was able to paint all of the stair surface I need (I had to provide stair tile quantities for the client). However the quantities are completely wrong. We were suspicious about it, so we calculated using different methods, other than material takeoff, surface area was smaller by twofold. Autodesk, could you please explain my client why he just bought twice as much tiles?

Interesting.

I never know designer has to provide material take off for stairs, or anything except square footage and building height, for liability exposure. Contractors usually do that themselves, unless you working for one.

(I m not protecting Revit, for its improving too slowly, and not in practical area).

I learn new things every day.

Smaller? This is a new one. I actually use paint to get the correct tiles area because default is wrong!

By default Revit calculates area of ALL sides of what ever is set for threads and risers. As if you're paining them (in reality, not Revit).

That's why I use paint in Revit and paint just the top surfaces to get the actual tile areas.

Left run is without paint, ceramic tile reported as 4.4m2 (wrong).

Right run is with paint, aluminium area reported as 1.98m2 (correct).

Though paining stairs also messes up concrete quantity, so have to be careful and do stair paining in another file.
