Host: None to Pick New Host

Helping out a lighting consultant:

I have some recessed can lights they are in the correct location but they have no host.  If I use "pick new host", choose "face" and place them, they will host to the ceiling, but they won't recess.  They just sit on the face of the ceiling.  If I "create similar", the new light fixture recesses correctly into the ceiling just fine.

What's that all about?

Is it a linked model?  You can host families but unless you are in the actual model it won't cut.

Linked Model yes.  I typically end up cutting holes in the arch. model for all fixtures.  This is a different problem though.  Won't let me change the host while maintaining a "recessed" position.  It defaults to a surface mounted condition.  Luckily he doesn't have the fixtures all intelligently tagged and scheduled - otherwise it would be a huge game over, redo situation.

Is the Light Fixture on the right side of the Work Plane? Flip Work Plane (via Flip icon).

I have two options when picking a new host for the light fixture - "Face" or "Work Plane".   If I place on work plane, it won't host to the ceiling (host changes from "none" to "not associated"), so I was using "Face".

When you select by workplane are you setting your workplane prior to placing?  Keep in mind it is a workplane in your model, not the linked one.

After selecting "New Host > Face" the fixture is being place upside down on the surface of the ceiling.   How do I flip the workplane?  might be the solution - I see no flip control icon.

No Flip Icon?  You sure? It's small; 2 arrows facing in opposite directions.

Nope.  Space Bar didn't work.  No flip control on the workplane.  This is Revit 2018.2 (if that makes a difference).  Is there usually a flip control on the workplane?

Giving up - I'll just redo the light fixtures.  It was a weird situation to start with, consultant had taken my model and started modeling inside of it.  I had to extract their work in order to make a new linked file for them.

Work in a 3d or elev/sec view and you should see the arrow.

Tried that too - resized it in 3D too, got rid of the section box, etc.  No flip control is visible.

AH - flip control on the light, not on the workplane.   that works.  but is there a way to keep my no-host lights in the exact same location when I change their host?

Huh? That's what I was saying. And regarding your question about whether or not you can keep the lights in the exact same location (as before the flip) makes me wonder if the issue is with the way the family was modeled. Want to post it?

Not easily.

- Select all the unhosted lights and make a group

- Select the group and copyclip

- Move the group a bit then ungroup the original group

- paste aligned from clipboard the copy of the group, pin it and disable selection of pinned element

- now you have the lights in the pinned group for location, and the shifted lights outside of the group to be getting a new host and relocated back to their original location

- after you are done hosting and aligning the lights, unpin and delete the group

It's just a normal can light.  I don't know, I always fight with light fixture families.

Man-o-man! In this whole thread I thought we were talking about HOSTED lights.  Imagine my surprise when the solution starts off by saying: "Select all the unhosted lights and make a group".   

Duh. 

...and when the OP credits screenshot of the Flip Icon I was describing is totally baffling.

Better to go with workplan setup to make the light to place on the ceiling
