I have skylights hosted by a roof with a slope. whenever I try and edit the slope of the roof the skylights do not follow the roof and delete from the model. Is there a way to prevent this or another way to model skylights so that this does not keep happening?

Sounds like the Skylight isn't actually hosted to the Roof.  Have you double-checked?

Yes, I am sure that it is hosted by a roof.
Above are the skylight and roof properties for clarification.

@Bonnie.James7G99N

Wall/Roof/Floor hosted window elements follow their host...they get deleted if you modify the host to an extent where these elements fall out of their host...ie: are not able to cut it

Face based windows / skylights on the other hand will end up floating until you re-host them

if it is neither/nor what you are experiencing...it would be interesting if you can share the file where this is happening or copy roof and window to clipboard >> paste in an empty file and share that
