Help with editing mass

I am trying to split up the faces on this mass so I can push pull. I would like to split using a reference plane that is set at the canopy level. How can I start to break this up?

Thank you. when I create a form using the profile of the existing extrusion, they are joined at the edge so I don't have true push pull functionality:

Is there a way to do horizontal push pull that leaves the proud edge and creates an inset edge?

For example I am trying to push this face in without bringing the edge with it.

I managed to get the right edit by creating a second extrusion from a drawn profile rather than Ctrl+selecting the edges and exruding that.

But I can't figure out why the behavior of the extrusions is so weird

Just another view showing how the top box wants to slide outward as I move the bottom grip...

You can't.  You can create another Form from the base of that Mass. TAB-Select just the base and Create Form from it.
