I want to select a Revit family already in the model and get a file path map of where on my computer its being loaded from, is that possible?

You could select an instance of the family (or find the family in the Project Browser), right click and choose Edit.  With the family open, choose the Save As option on from the Application Menu (big "R" in upper left corner) and see where the initial default save location is.  If that family already exists there, that is likely the version that was loaded into the project.

Is there a way to break the stored file path from the family in your project? We are starting to do jobs in a more current version of Revit and I am worried that someone will open a family that is in our template, edit it and save it back to the network drive where it is stored. If they do this in a newer version of Revit the family cannot be used in older versions anymore.

Make the library read only to prevent accidental overwriting.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Hello @CVDemick ,

I came across this post today.   I understand it's been a long while since your post but wanted to share this information which might help understand the behavior more and how to force a new path if needed.

Family Reload... opens the wrong directory from where the family is saved in Revit

@michael.coviello , in order to keep our families from being inadvertently upgraded we have changed the double click options for families and set it to "do nothing". This keeps users from accidentally opening the Families. We also keep good back ups of our standard families just in case something goes wrong.
