Filters and visibility overrides for Legends

Am I missing something or can you not override the graphics of an element within a legend?

For example if I have a setting in my visibility graphics or a filter that has changed the appearance of a wall, can I reflect this on the legend?

Revit legends are not quite up to par with the rest of the program. They are indeed limited in the use of graphic overrides and filters. You would think the same view properties could be applied in the legend but NO.
You could try a few work arounds like creating a 2D legend using the same Revit linework that the filter or override requires but remember this is of course not parametric. Or use a separate Revit file with walls as a legend and the filters applied to company standards. Export to CAD and import the CAD linework into Revit legend or drafting view. Neither is ideal but hopefully this helps you.

Hi

Revit won't reproduce graphic overrides for legend components. However, there's a turnaround.

If you know and understand phases, you can create 2 phases before your project's first one, and do your legends using actual components, instead of legend components. Ex:

I'll start my project. It's a refurbishment, so I'll need and Existing and a New Construction phase;

  • All existing building I'll model at the Existing phase. The new components, I'll model at the New Construction phase;
  • Whole building done, I'll start set my views for documentation. To optimize the task, I'll make VIEW TEMPLATES;
  • Now I need to do the wall legends. So I'll set another 2 phases BEFORE existing: Legend Build and Legend Demo;
  • I'll create a new view (floor, RCP, elevation or section) and place my walls. These walls will be created at the Legend Build phase and demolished at the Legend Demo phase. Why? Because I don't want them to be temporary, created and demolished at the same phase. Neither want them to be demolished at the Existing phase, because I don't wanna risk they show in a view or be scheduled at the phase;
  • Legend view (floor, RCP, elevation or section) created, I can now apply to it the same view template I use in an actual project view. If I need to repeat the same legend sometimes, I'll duplicate dependant views - so any changes at the legend will reflect throughout all views. If I need any new graphic overrides, it will be applied at the same time to both project and legend views.

At the end of the day, I used actual model components and project views instead of legend components and legend views.

I hope it helps you.

Thanks to you both, you've given examples of workarounds that we have employed.

The issue for me is that there is a potentially very useful legend function that needs bringing up to speed.

Looks like another post on the idea station!

Thank you, John. Actually, I didn't have the credit for conceiving it, but
I use and guarantee that there are several advantages.

@Your post imples that you were missing out on something ie: not sure about it.. If you would have been sure, you wouldn't have asked if you can "reflect certin graphic overrides and filters on legends" because you you would have known that you can do that using several workarounds + the brilliant idea @Anonymous.bezzera gave you

Next time when you REALY do have a workaround please do mention it in the OP ... so that people won't waste their time...this is the third post I read with same attitude I don't think I will bother reading your next...

There is doable and not doable...The term "Workaround" is the excuse of the ungreatful...who realize that it was pretty much obvious and they missed it

It's a figure of speech, maybe it's a language barrier.

As it's not a solution within the legend visibility controls, then it's a workaround.

I agree though, it's best that you stay well clear of my posts.

althought you didn't give me a very convincing reply on the last question I asked you but this one I have to admit it is brilliant. I was trying to figure how to put together a phase filter legend and your reply here gave me the greatest idea...

Jason, you're incredibly rude even when you're trying to be nice and that's
why I don't try to help you anymore. Just keep in mind that this is a
debate/help forum, and as long as we don't get paid, we don't have any
obligation to anyone. Most of the time I'm doing my best to answer someone
here, I'm leaving my own paid job behind and my behind in the line.

But thanks for the comment anyway. I wish I knew the true genius behind
this idea to give him/her the credits. I would never conceive this by
myself.

What's more important is that you're sharing that knowledge Rodrigo and it's already helped others on this forum.

I appreciate your response and sorry if my reply wasn't as gracious as it should have been, what you've stated are the best solutions under the current setup.

Hello all!

Another workaround is to use a Design option to do so. We uses to have a Legends phase in our template but for Revit newbies it's somehow difficult to be implemented, they use to mess things between worksets and between phases.

Hey @FrantxoMOD, thanks for jumping in. Design option is a powerful and versatile tool and I use it as well back at the office to keep some information secure, like structural columns, grids and whatever is too important to be moved around by accident. BUT, I'd neve use it as newbies countermeasures.

Best thing to do in this case is teach your team the hows, the whys and etc because no matter what to do, the reckless one is impetuous and he/she will find a way to crack the system and mess up what he/she's not supposed to. The road to hell is full of good intentions.

I create the legend with legend components and then just draw the demolished wall indicators with lines.

I strongly advise you don't do that, because you loose all of Revit automation in the process. Every time you choose a manual process over something the software can automatically do for you, you're opening a door for a silly human error.

I always apply the same Template to Views and Legends. If I use a filling in the legend, then I edit the filter and add and comment-filter to apply the same override.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture-forum/legends-for-rule-based-filters/m-p/8234709/h...

(They are not two filters anymore but one with an OR filter, before Revit 2019 that wasn't an option.)
