Existing Phase Walls showing as New Construction via Phase override

Hi,

I have just started a project set up all my sheet and templates. I thought it would be great to use phase filters to show existing [grey] demo [red] and new [blue]

I set all my existing walls to existing phase with phase demolished as none.

The template is showing 'show existing'

The existing walls are showing in blue.

I have combined phases and made a new new phase because i thought maybe I made them on the new phase. but this hasnt worked.

Any help would to make my existing walls appears as per the phase filter [grey] would be appreciated.

Thank you

Phases are a little mindboggling when first using but in your instance if you think about the Existing Walls unless you move onto a new/next phase they are current so will show as being new/current.

The Graphic Filter/Overrides apply to a Phase and not necessarily the Item/Object itself so can confuse things even further.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for you assistance - in this case the walls are all set up correctly please see the screenshots below - I would say I am a intermediate revit user I have used phases over the last 8 months. The wall below is created in an existing phase and isnt being demolished when I turn the view template to show Existing + Demo the walls dissappear. They are somehow on a new construction phase. Can this happen if the walls were orginally drawn in a GA new construction or paperspace phase?

If you have been using them for a while now what do you think you have done differently here than other projects?

I have opened a blank Template, drew some walls and set them to Existing

jay_colcombe_0-1695041327168.png

Edited the Phases as yours and set the Phase to Existing and the Filter to Existing + Demo

The walls disappear

I set the New to "By Category" or "Override" and they appear - Remember, here I have 4 walls only all set to "Existing"

And finally changing the View to New Construction the show as Existing with the Existing Override

I have no "New" walls in my model only existing.

Try copying Phases that working from one of your other models to this on - Manage Tab > Transfer Project Standards

Hey Jay,

Thanks for this -

I have done what you have asked -

It appears the existing wall has turned blue. I.E it is being overridden by the new phase graphics.

The Wall in an existing phase

The view template in Show existing + demo

The phase filter settings for show existing +demo

The phase graphic override - The new phase somehow is sending all elements created in an existing phase blue.

As a test add in the additional "Show Only Current Phase Filter" and set to Existing you will see unless you set the New Category to display it wont show Existing Walls.  Think of it as they are "New" to that Phase if not when were they created?

Hi Jay,

I think I figured it out.

So the phase is always new construction?

When would you ever use the existing phase?

When you just want to show what was there originally, think of it as a simple extension to a house, the architect will draw up the existing house "Existing Phase" and only show this in a View.  Then they create the "New Phase" (extension) and then in this view it could be New Construction and the Phase Filter would be "Show Previous + New, so you can differentiate between Existing & New. (obviously most people just draw existing as filled regions so just override it)

If you want to show the existing walls as existing, set the view phase to new and phase filter to show previous + demo.  When your walls are created under existing phase and your view is existing then the walls are new in that view.

Also, don't name your phase filter as show existing, name it show previous. It is less confusing.
