Dual Category Families

I think I know the answer already, but is it possible to have dual category families?  IE, I have a generator which is an electrical equipment category.  However, I would like the generator to be seen in my site plan, but I turn electrical equipment off so as not to see breaker panels, disconnects, etc.  How do I display the generator on the site if the electrical equipment category is turned off?

Nest a shared family from a category that visible on the site plan view in the electrical equipment family.  Or put the equipment in a subcategory of the Electrical category tree that can be turned on individually for the site plan view.
