Door Handle Rotation

Hi everybody,

I've come across some cool video tutorials on how to properly model door families. There is the usual (very good) stuff presented by Revit Pure (12 Tips To Master Door Families), which I've seen in tandem with the other tutorial on how to create a nested door swing family (Create a Customizable Door Plan Swing). Once done the above, I wanted to test a door family that not only had the 2d info for the swing but also showed the actual 3d panel opening. To achieve that I've used the family created with the above instructions and edited following part of the instructions given in this tutorial by Balkan Architects: Door Family That Opens

Something not shown in that video is the handle. When I tried to insert it in that family and lock it to the surface of the door panel (and to the shorter edge to keep the same distance, no matter how wide the door it gets), when I changed the rotation angle the handle didn't follow the door panel. Any advice on which dimensions / parameters I should add to the family to make it work?

Hi,

That's what I did but didn't work. Please see attached family with the door family (Porta_1Anta_Rotante) that can be rotated and also the door handle (Porta_Maniglia) that I originally tried to insert as nested family. Sorry but the families were created using Italian language 😊

You can just make the extrusion for the door in the nested Porta_Anta+Apertura_2d.rfa family which controls the door angle.
Lock the extrusion sketch lines to the reference lines that are there already.
Remodel the door knob as generic face based family and place it at the location you want on the surface of the extrusion (fixed position, if you want it parametric let me/us know).

Question: can I keep the panel extrusion in the other family? I'd rather not to add anything 3d in the 'Porta_Anta+Apertura_2d.rfa' family. 

As you have certainly seen the door handle I'd previously created is not much parametric and I did it very quickly. Do you happen to have a knob family that is more parametric and line based you can share? That would be really appreciated.

yes, you can also do the same in the family itself and skip step 1.  I just prefer to nest the panel geometry I guess.

It's not such a complicated door knob geometry, I'm sure you can model it in no time as face based family...

See attached.  I placed the face based knob on both side of the panel.  You just need to constrain the dimensions from the level and the edge of the door.

@ToanDN I've just had the time to take a look at the knobs you've inserted and once added the reference plane to adjust the height and constrained them to the edge of the door they work fine. Thanks a lot!

One more question (curiosity). Instead of constraining the knobs to the door edge adding a specific dimension (i.e. 100mm), is there a way to make that distance a parameter (either type or instance) so that I can change that distance if needed? I've tried adding a reference line and a parametrized dimension but it didn't work 🤔

You should be able to just add a parameter to the dimension, after selecting it... an instance parameter if you want it adjustable for every door seperately, a type parameter for properties belonging to a door type.

That's how it is in the Family I posted. Host the Nested Door Handle Family to the same Ref. Line/Work Plane that the Nested Door Panel Family is host to, and pull Labeled Dimensions between the Door Handle and the R.L.

Thanks a lot! As sometimes happens in Revit, the solution is easier than you'd expect. I thought I'd need to add a reference line, lock it to the panel edge and then add the dim from that line to the centre line of the knob family. And that method didn't work. As you said, I actually only had to add the dim and parametrize it. So easy!!!
