Disciplines and sheeting

I am a student and am trying to determine what exactly I should have on the different sheets. Should everything be on the Architectual Floor Plan? Electical,,furniture, plumbing fixtures. Is there a place to read about this?

I think you have to look at it this way. Drawings are a way of communicating with other parties. These other parties can be clients, suppliers, manufacturers, colleagues, bosses etc.

By talking to this other parties you find out what kind of information they will need to do their job. That is what you put on drawings. So the end-user might be interested in a nice 3d picture, while the electical engineer needs all kinds of data regarding electricity (e.g single line diagrams, socket locations) and a structural engineer will have his own data requirements.

It varies depending on the purpose of your drawings.

 

For construction drawings that will be used to obtain permits and be used in the field by the trades:

 

Try to separate building systems (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, audio/visual, etc.) out into their own E sheets, M sheets, P sheets, etc. Now, there are some exceptions. Generally plumbing fixtures show up on Architectural floor plans and lighting fixtures show up on Architectural reflected ceiling plans, but they aren't called out (tagged) or scheduled there, and certainly all the piping or circuiting isn't shown there.

 

For presentation drawings that will be used to facilitate design meetings with clients:

 

This is a lot more subjective, and will depend upon your goals. For example, maybe you want an Architectural floor plan with some place-holder furniture layed out along with electrical receptacles, so that the client can visualize the possible relationships and advise you about a few particular receptacle locations that they really want. That's just an example...there are numerous situations where a non-traditional combination all on one drawing can be helpful prior to design completion, but they won't be useful in the final construction set.

 

There are exceptions to the above:

 

That mostly applies to larger, commercial/industrial/institutional projects. If you're doing something else, such as acting as the contractor for the construction of your own house, and you know for example that maybe the framer is also going to set the receptacle boxes, then by all means give him a drawing showing just the walls and the receptacle locations.
