Disable selection of elements in View Range/View Depth

Hey everyone!

I'm not exactly new to Revit, but I'm not yet a pro user, so bear with me.

 I want to show what's beneath the bottom of a cut plane, so I set the view depth to a floor below the associated one, for example. And that's fine, it shows me everything I want to see; however, as expected, I'm now able to select everything from the floor below, which I absolutely don't want, since I might accidentally move an element.

Underlay doesn't work here, because it works like a wireframe mode.

So, my question is: is there a way to disable the selection of elements that are below the bottom of the primary range of the View Range?

Why don't you use Underlay instead and uncheck the "Select underlay option"

The problem with Underlay is that it shows everything like in a wireframe mode - I dont' want to see what's inside the building, I just want to see what's on the outside, for example. Underlay will show me everything inside the walls of a house, while view range doesn't - it only reveals what's not "covered".

But while Underlay has the option to disable the selection of elements, like you showed, View Range doesn't.

Or pin these elements and uncheck pinned elements, under selection same as above.

I had thought of pinning the elements, but I was hoping there'd be a faster way...

It depends what is the purpose of the exercise … if it is to do some linework or align elements...etc why would u care if underlay shows wall openings? It is a temp thingy which you are later disabling. 

If I am not mistaken, setting view range to capture the lower level also shows openings and elements in the walls! so I am not sure which exactly which hidden elements you do not want to see.

My purpose is solely to have a general plan of the top of the building and its surroundings (without showing anything inside the buildings) so that I can work on that view (filled regions, detail lines and whatnot), to put in a sheet.

More like the Site View... bird eye on the floor level with the surroundings as in external landscape similar to the below you mean?

My cut plane is set to 0, so I don't think lowering or rising it will achieve what I want to achieve.

Not entirely sure what you want to do, but another idea I could think of to have elements not selectable (if pinning doesn't work for you somehow) is to place these elements within a design option. Those would not be selectable with exclude options ticked. But I'm not entirely sure what this does with scheduling ie., never tried that. So I would still opt for pinning probably.

You can use a selection filter, select everything you don't want in your view, save selection, add selection to your filter and untick to hide all of this selection. Not showing elements is not the same as not being able to select them though.

the fastest way is to make those items in your View Range "Un-Selectable" but still visually there:

-by Pinning all elements on the levels below (or) above the view you are in.
-then TURN OFF the "Select Pins" so that your curses doesnt highlight/select the elements on the level beyond.

-that way you can work in your current level/view range and have those items beyond "Un-selectable".
