Dimensions and changing beams

Hi all,

 

something that has been bothering me for quiet a while is the inability of Revit to keep dimensions/tags in place when you make changes to geometry.

Look at my example to see what I mean. And this is simply one of the easier problems.

Shouldn't a software like Revit have the intelligence to keep tags and dimensions where they are, even when changes are made?

This is even more horrible when tagging rebar details etc

I cannot repeat here with 2025.2 and the HEA section supplied, it is clear the dimensions is losing association with the original element, if you redraw them on the 140 and switch to the 160 does if repeat?

 

Are these OOTB Families?

The dimensions are also on the wall the beam is lying on, because the contractor needs to know how far the beam goes on top of the wall. Did you make a dimension with a wall and beam?

Although the family name looks custom, it's just a standard european steel frame revit beam  with another family name and some shared parameters added to it.

Can you try an OOTB family such as a UB and see if it repeats!

I can only think it is picking a reference on the beam or the wall that is not planar and hence the issue

Hi,

I've tried it with a universal beam and that seems to work, but we can't use universal beams as the naming is unfamiliar to me. We use HEA/HEB/HEM, while the UB uses naming like 1016x305x487UB.

Could you take a look at our family, it might have something to do with our cut void underneath the beam.

That was the reasoning for the asking if a UB/UC worked as I had a sneaky suspicion that this was an edited family and UB/UC are simply HEA equivalents so just picking a OOTB beam with no modification was the test!

 

I cannot repeat it here and the only thing I can think of is if the Dimension in your model is referencing the Void and this changes when swapping beams out and causes the disassociation with the dimension or no longer planar?
