Difference between Black and purple Reference point.

Hi, I am working on a parametric Vault family where instance families are loaded in the main host family. The problem is with the reference points of my Host family. When I try to instance any type of Arc family on the Reference points in Host family, the Arc is created Flat on the reference level rather than standing in Z axis. 

I am following the Autodesk Class on "Parametric Modeling of Vaults for Notre Dame in Revit". In the video I have noticed another difference, the Color of the reference points. In the video the Color is Purple whereas my reference points are Black.

Kindly share your feedback on how to fix my instance Arcs. 

Any help regarding this issue will be much appreciated.

It's all about work planes. You need to first set the work plane you want to draw on. Is that mentioned in the tutorial you are following?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have tried placing it on the reference plane on one of the reference points. But as mentioned in the tutorial the arc has to be placed On the face of each host point. Placing the arc on one of the reference planes of the point although makes the arc stand in Z-axis but it doesn't work as an adaptive object which is critical for the vault family to function.

I think the purple ones are in a Conceptual mass family and yours is a Generic Model Adaptive family.

I'm not totally following you, but I'm talking work planes -- not Ref. Planes.   Change the Reference Point to an Adaptive Point and you'll see it surrounded by Work Planes. Choose one to draw on.  Or add a third Reference Point on the Front/Back Reference Plane - and in-between the start and end Reference Point - and then spline through all three Reference Points. Adjust the elevation of the middle Reference Point to increase or decrease the spline arch.  Most of this info is available through the second link I provided.

I don't think this is clear in the second link I post you to...

Hover your mouse over the Reference Point and press the TAB key repeatedly to cycle through the RP's work planes.

Sorry I meant work planes and yes I have tried that. The problem with setting the arc family on a work plane of RP is that you can only have the Arc family associated to one RP rather than two. By using Place on Face (which is used in the Tutorial as well) the Arc is hosted on both RPs, which allows its adaptive behavior but creates a flat arc lying on the reference level.

Got it. Thanks. But the problem still remains of the flat arcs on the Reference level. Shifting from generic model Adaptive to Mass family doesn't solve this issue.

Found the solution for the Flat lying arcs. While creating the Arc families the Always Vertical Option in the Properties pallet must be turned on otherwise the host family will mess up the instance arcs.

You are terribly confused.  This "solution" has absolutely nothing to do with  your original question which was about why the Arc was created Flat on the reference level rather than standing in Z axis.  This thread is full of solution-worthy posts, but this one is not even close!

yes, sorry about the confusion. I am new to this type of family and wasn't able to clearly state my problem. In the beginning I thought the issue was the host family but instead it was with the Arc families.

Thank you for your help. 

P.S. Yes I too believe there are multiple solution-worth answers in the thread. I tried all of these already but the problem was still there.

You can control the point colors by using object styles command.
