Cutting rafter tails with void

I am working on a hipped roof with rafter tails.  The rafter tails are a face-based family and placed on the underside face of the roof.  As the rafter tails move closer to the corner, they protrude through the face of the roof.  See below.

I *thought* would be able to simply create a model-in-place void extrusion following the shape of the hip and subtract the tails to clean up the condition.  However, when I model the void I cannot choose the tails for cutting.  I can choose many other items (walls, the roof the tails are hosted to, etc) but not the tails.  I have adjusted the family category to different categories to see if that would work, but no joy.

Is this due to the tails being face based?  Any suggestions for workarounds?  My preference is to not have 6 different tails lengths as they get closer to the corner.

Really thought I had a clever solution.  Revit loves to make me feel like a dummy.

You can try this, create a reference plane, place where you want to cut your rafter then go cut geometry, pick your rafter and then your reference place and see if helps. Thanks

Is there a reason you are not using structural beam systems to create the rafters?

Here are a few options for you:

1. Edit your face based Rafter/Beam family and make it parametric with Length and End Angle. 

2. Use Structural Framing so you can cut the ends with a reference plane.

3. Create a face based void family to cut your face based Beam family...... probably not a good idea...

@ennujozlagam I cannot cut with the reference plane.  On a hunch, I tried to cut using the model in place as a solid.  It cuts!

Great, then to clean it up I thought I could go into the model in place and change to a void.  No.  Revit says the void is not cutting anything and will be deleted.

@ToanDN I am not greatly familiar with structural beam systems yet.  A face-based family hosted to the underside of a thin roof (substrate + finish) is a flexible, simple method to get the desired result.....so long as it is a gable condition 🙂  Will a structural beam system host to the underside of a roof?  I will start looking to that.

@bin I was hoping to avoid option 1.  I know that I can do that at the end of the day, if needed.  For option 2, they are a structural framing family.  I cannot choose a reference plane to cut with, though.  Not sure why yet.  Option 3 will be a last resort.

Ok, ok, so the 'structural framing' rafter tails aren't actually structural framing members.  I confess.  Busted.  They are generic face based models changed to the structural framing category.

Apparently that makes a difference when using the cut with reference plane feature.  I created a new tail using the true framing member template and can cut with a reference plane then.  I will explore this is report back.

A structural will host to a sloped roof when you create it and pick the roof as the work plane. You can draw the boundary sketch by picking the roof edges and the beams will be created inside the boundary with the OC spacing of your choosing. You can change the entire set of beams to a different member sizes all at once, or change some individually. It is the best tool for laying out horizontal and sloped framing.

@ToanDN  is correct, Beam System will be the go to method for you.

Which means that  you need to use proper Structural Framing family, not your face based beam family.
