Is there a way to create a custom-shaped selection window?

not possible just use your mouse to select.

Do you know how to use the SHIFT key to remove elements from a selection set?  Filter dialog box is pretty handy as well for this.  Also, Temporary Hide/Isolate and temporary selection restrictions before making a crossing-window selection can help narrow the selection.

A custom selection "lasso" option would still be very useful.
