CUSTOM BALUSTER SLOPE

in the video attached, i point out that i made a baluster panel and post but i cant get either to work the way i need. i show them my project and you can see how the balcony railing looks fine, but the stair railing, not so much.

my question is:

why does the post/panel not slope with the railing? does that make sense?

You need to add a void in the family and constrain it to the sloped ref plane.  Look at one of the OOTB baluster or baluster panel family and see how it is done.

So do a void that is visible based on a parameter?

And should I do this in a baluster panel or baluster post family? or does it even matter

Sorry, I just graduated so im intermediate at Revit. OOTB? I also couldn't find a video anywhere and im a visual person.

A void constrained to the system sloped reference plane in a baluster or baluster panel family.  That sloped plane is the slope of the host in the project and you don't need to enter Slope Angle value manually anywhere.

There are pre-made template for Baluster, Baluster post, And Baluster Panel.  Why not use them for what they are?

OOTB = Out of the Box or the families that come with Revit, installed as part of the deployment. If you're a student using your school's software then you'll have to find out where they have placed this content. Usually it is already mapped to your Revit install so you can just browse to the content.

 

Look at the existing families, for Revit 2024 they are in the Railings > Balusters folder. There are three baluster templates for families: Baluster.rft, Baluster - Panel.rft and Baluster - Post.rft.

 

A baluster Post is meant for the start and end of a railing or at divisions between balusters. So your family should be a Baluster Panel since it is being spread across the overall railing. A baluster is meant for individual items while the panel is meant for more complicated assemblies.

 

I suspect you want the panel to slope so the horizontal parts follow the slope of the stair whether flat or sloped? You'll have to design/constrain those "horizontal" parts to be parallel to the slope reference planes too. The void @Anonymous mentions is used to cut off the excess above and below the railing where the baluster contacts the railings defined in the railing type.

 

These families are among the more difficult to create in Revit so it will help to analyze how the existing families are built to see what is going on.

so I built the one I need from the family of a basic one and changed the parameters/constraints to the width that I need, and the voids aren't cut in the project.
