curtain panel pattern based - pattern goes beyond panel/ subdivided surface)

I was wondering how to get the pattern of a a curtain panel system to stop extending past the surface hosting it:

Any ideas short of resizing the massing element, is there a way to stop the panels from going past the surface extents? Thank you so much.

FYI: The issue being described in this link has nothing to do with what you are showing.

I've got an answer for you. I've just made a Screencast video and it is uploading now. I'll post it in a few minutes after it's ready.

@chrisplyler Wow! Lights, camera, action AND SOUND! I don't think I've ever seen a Screencast with sound before.  In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a Screencast from you before. Is this your first? How long did it take to upload?

If you check my profile page, you'll see that I've done about ninety Screencasts. Only a handful of them have sound though. This 10-minute one took about two minutes to upload, and about another ten minutes or so for the server to "process" it and make it available for viewing.

Hello Chris,

Thanks so much for the video! In your video, the issue you investigated mainly was that the ref lines weren't locked (constrained) to the grid. For my pattern, I modeled it locked. The issue was was that the grid I was using was 2833mm by 1000mm. The panel could accommodate any size, but for some reason, since it was set as fixed distance, if the actual surface was slightly smaller than a multiple of 2833 or 1000, then it would get cut off a panel or part of a panel. In order to remedy that, after looking at how you were switching the fixed distances, it gave me the idea of trying to use 2833 by 985mm instead of 1000mm. That way, the panel size fit just inside of the surface that was smaller than a 1000mm multiple.

And of course, I had to play around with where I used Border Tile: Empty vs Border Tile: Partial

You shouldn't have to lock anything or add any constraining dimensions inside the curtain panel pattern base, except for controlling the grille array.  You could have model the family 20 cm long or 20 meter long and it still fits when loaded on the host pattern.  That is the whole point of being adaptive.

If you're hosting on one of the side reference lines, and you're modeling components over to the other side reference line, they don't automatically get a constraint there. So they will maintain their modeled length even when the panel size changes.

I wasn't follow the topic very closely so I might have missed something then.  By the way, what reference line are you referring to?  Is it inside the pattern based family?

That is an interesting conclusion so I will try to replicate it.

I did some test and the only overhang I've gotten is that infamous 2" for all the partial border tiles as per this link.  I may have misunderstood you but changing the pattern based family from 10' x 10' to 1' x 1' does not have any effects when assigned it to the surfaces.

So I changed all border tiles to empty and manually placed the same pattern based family on one tile and repeat it.  That seems to work (bottom image).

Yes, inside the pattern based panel family. Take a look at my screencast higher up in the thread.
