Creating a Generic Family - Roof Based...... joining to the roof!?

I've been battling with this family for hours now.

I'm trying to create a cupola family which creates an opening cut in the pitched roof. The issue is though that I cannot get the base of the massed element to extend down to the opening of the roof (in the same way that you would attach the base of a wall to a floor)

I've been trying to find a way to lock the lower extents to the opening cut but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've added a screen capture to show what my issue is.

Instead of using a family,

You could try creating the cupola with walls, louvers and a roof, the Group them. Then attach the walls to the main roof.

Thanks for the suggestion.

After some time away from the model what I thought to do was to create extra parts to the family below the roof line and create a parametric void for the angle/depth of the void. Now I just need to make sure that the family is placed in the right place (probably not the best way to be done but everything is just in one family now.
