creating 3d roof tiles

Hi everyone,

I'm a self taught revit user, i am trying to create a 3d roof tile family so i could use on multiply jobs.

Ive downloaded the model from the manufacturer but i cant import it into my project as a family, ive tried importing as sat file, exploding it but dont really know what i have to do.

Can someone please look at the file and guide me what i have to do?

Using the technique from the website, you can create it using slope glazing with the tile.

Have you thought about just making life easier on yourself. Or do you really want to model and place a bunch of individual overlapping tiles?  Lot of work.  What about a Tile Material instead?

seems pretty simply but first i have to make that tile into a family which i have no idea how to do

that is what im trying to archieve, do you know how i could make that concrete tile file be used for sloped glazing?

In the family, I check on Workplane base and check off always vertical. This means the family can be hosted to reference plan or surface. In the curtainwall, you make the tile host vertically so it will able to host to slope glazing.

How did you get that menu to pop up? mine looks different.

"In the family", select the tile, click edit family above, adjust and load back into the project.

Your is in project environment. Mine is in family editor. To get the tile to work with slope glazing, you have to placed the 3d inside the family.

The big question is, what is your experience level?  I mean, there are several ways to do this - each requiring a greater level of experience and knowledge.  But this forum is about in-depth training. There are tons of learning resources available on the internet -- just a keyword search away.  One approach would be to do these individual tiles at a pattern-based curtain panels in a divided surface like I showing here.  But it's no walk in the park.  There's a lot to learn and a lot to practice.   But if you are interested in learning and practicing this method, then start Googling using keywords like "Divided Mass Surface with Pattern-Based Curtain Panels".

Are you able to give me the steps? 

Once i get that tile model into the family template, i could do the rest as per the youtube video..

Just insert your 3d model profile into curtainwall panel family template. Make sure you go to elevation and place it in there.

Load it in to your project. Create a curtainwall type and add in your tile spacing and make set the tile as your curtain panel. Check the sample file I've provided.

hi all,

Took a while but ive finally managed to add it to the project by creating a mass object and dividing the surface (is this method slower than using sloped glazing?)

but i cannot get the tiles to stack on top of each other cleanly, ive tried to angle the tile at 2 degrees in the family template but it still doesnt sit correctly.

What is the best way to do this?

Since the tile is set as flat, you have to create angle inside that tile family to make it rotate in angle. Normal flat tile won't allow you to rotate. You can check the sample to see how I've set it up.

Just one last question, how do i edit your tile within that project? the tiles are not stacked properly width wise so ive assumed i have to edit the grid width in the tile family template?

Not sure which method you're using at this point, but I'm guessing you simply adjust the (horizontal) spacing? Or do you mean to add an(other) angle parameter in the family?

If you want overlap, let assume your tile is 440mm and your overlap gap is 20mm, then your adaptive grid would be 420mm instead of 440mm.

yeah ive figured that out playing with the grid spacing but the tile isnt lined up properly, is there a way to get back into the tile family and readjust it? i think i may have placed the tile incorrectly unless theres another way to do this

In the adaptive family, you have to add midpoint line and then lock the panel to the mid point line.

Result will align the panel as straight. See attached

Aren't you using the wrong Pattern? Shouldn't it be a 1/2 Step? That's how tiles are laid here.
