Creating two solid forms in the conceptual mass family

Hello,

I am trying to replicate the columns of toyo itos sendai mediatheque building in the conceptual mass environment.

 

If you look at the screenshots, this description will make more sense:

Each circle is actually two semi-circles joined together and I want to connect each semi-circle to the corresponding semi-circle above through the create solid tool. However, once i create the first solid, I try to connect the remaining half of the semi-circle with the one above and the first solid dissapears! 

 

Is there a reason why this is happening?

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe just selected both circle ( semi-circle *4) and create the form.

I think that the most appropriate way to achieve something like these hollow "columns" from Sendai Center:

would be by using a Generic Model Adaptive family (Adaptive Points)
