Maybe mistake is a bit too much.
However it is not how it was meant to be used. If you look at the phasing tools you might see two important things actions (create, demolish) and time periods (phases). So demolishing is more an action that happens during a phase. You might argue that demolishing can be a phase. Then it can be confusing if you have a demolishing phase(s) and a demolishing action. Further there can be several phases which requires demolishing things. Then to create a separate demolishing phase for each instance might make it too convoluted. Also the filters (new, existing, demolished, temporary) are geared to different hings happening during a phase.
That said, I have seen several projects where they did use one or more demolish phases. So if you want to use demolishing phases you can still do that, especially if agreed by your team and partners.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
I'll just add that having an actual Demolition Phase will defeat the Demolished Phase Status overrides. Not a show-stopper. Just something to be aware of (and workaround) when you are wondering why a specific View Phase Filter isn't working as expected.
