create a opening in a column

Hello,

It's possible to create a family that can create a opening in a column ? I don't want to use the command "opening" because i want to be able to add a tag to the opening.

Yes. Use a face based family with a void cutting the solid in the family.

In order for an unattached Void in a Face-Based family to cut an element inside the host, you would need to check "Cuts with Void When Loaded".  No?

If you don't cut the solid with the void in the family then you do have to check that box.  If you cut it like the image I show then no need.

I just read it differently. It sounded like the family he wanted was just a Void Cut that he would load and place on the face of a column (and then cut) inside the project.

You read it right. And that is how I show.  Using a face based s just a means to host the void on a face of the column more easily than a stand alone void.

Interesting. 2017.2 Unattached Void in family won't cut in Project unless "Cuts with Void When Loaded" is checked.

That is still true for all versions.  As I already said, that box needs to be checked UNLESS the void pre-cuts the host (face, wall, floor, roof, ceiling) in the family.  Unattached void family has no host, so for sure, it needs to be checked as well.
