Convert a window family from Wall Based to Face Based

I work for a window manufacturer and we have a problem with converting our window families from wall based to face based.

The windows and doors that we export out of our production software are wall based.

But the contractor has send me a Revit model where some of the window voids already are made.

This means that our windows can’t be wall based.

I have already found a way to make windows face-based.

But it only works for a couple of windows. Such as window 021 in attachment.

With all other windows like window 002b in attachment it goes wrong with the "copy monitor" and I do not know what I'm doing wrong.

Can somebody help me with this one?

The Copy/Monitor "hack" is just that. It can work, but I would avoid it.

Windows ( and doors) in Revit are really intended to be placed into System Family Walls. The window families 

contain "Opening cuts" which act as a void when loaded into the project to cut the walls.

Where I have seen the "hack" used is when voids are placed into the window family INSTEAD of the Opening Cut,

which is deleted, to help control returns of the finishes into the wall jams, etc.

Again, I would stay away from the hack and use Cut Profile in large scale details to show the finish returns.

I'll echo @cbcarch's soft warning about using this hack -- it can be problematic.  If it's a family you want to continue using down the line, I would suggest investing the time now to re-create the family using the proper template.

You don't need the hack.

In the family, just remove the opening-cut element or void-extrusion/family that creates the opening in the wall.

In the project, you can then place the stripped family on a remaining part of the wall and move it to the required position.

In the family editor (family Orgadata Family 2018 - 07 - 02 11 - 18 - 24.rfa ) you'd need to delete the voids with ID 341917 and 341924.

But I see that they are part of your family template, and so you can't delete them.

There is however an other way to accomplish your goal.

• select the 2 voids and the wall [ Manage ] [ Select by ID ] 341380,341917,341924
• Isolate the 3 elements  ["glasses in the statusbar"]

 

• Uncut void from the wall. [Modify][Geometry][Uncut Geometry]  select the wall, select a void.
• Uncut void from the wall. [Modify][Geometry][Uncut Geometry]  select the wall, select the other void.
• Load into Project.
