Content management - which app?

Hi all,

At the company I work I took the responsibility to take care of the family management.
I have been doing some google but would love to here your (revit experts) opinions about it.

I am searching for a nice tool to manage the different family's we use. It has to be simple for experienced and new users. So the front end has to be real user friendly.

The two applications I found and looks nice for the job are:
- Unifi
- Content Studio

Anyone in here has some experience with one or both apps?
Any other sugestions about also good or even better apps?

Unifi is a good start.  Nice thing is they upgrade your families for the new version of Revit.

There is also KiwiCodes Family Browser....at the same time I suggest checking out their Project Browser too.

We have decided to chose for

- CTC Bim List Server

Now we are running the Bim List Browser (stand alone), just for trying out. When most content is ready, we order the Bim List Server, to fill our databases.

Couple reasons why we choose this one:

first of all I watched a nice video (1hour) on youtube from "Parallax team" about this app, this gave me a nice complete view over the possibilities.

- you don't have to put all the content in the cloud (it can stay on own server);

- front end for users is very friendly;

- CTC has more nice apps to use;

- possiblity easily and fast to switch between databases;

- admin tool, for nice option (add tags, asign users to databases);

- very good search option for content (tags, family names, type names, sizes), even possible to save search settings;

- family types all visible in browser, but only loaded in project on demand;

- tags can easily be added lateron;

Though this is an old thread, I thought I might chime in - and ask others as well.

We have looked at Avail, Unifi, BIM Object Hercules, and Hive. Right now, I am strongly leaning toward Hive, as it has a lot of the same features as others, though I do admit that some of other others have a more attractive UI (avail); but the price point is hard to beat. Particular renewal.

Anyone else have updates on what you chose and if you would suggest it?

We have been using HIVE since October and our users really love it.  It's very simple to set up for the Admin.  I have received a lot of feedback from users that it has saved them tons of time when searching for families.  There is also a function for requests so users can request an specific item or if they find a family that is not working correctly and they can flag it for review.  Then an email is send directly to the admin.

Another benifit is you can use it for more than just Revit files.  Multiple file types including Sketchup, images and pdf documents, just to name a few. I also love that you can have drafting views which is great because we have "Container Files" filled with drafting view details.  HIVE now makes it easy to search those files and help users to find a detail.  Then just drag and drop it to their project.  Instantly creating a drafting view with the detail in their project.

I would definitely recommend HIVE for your office.

@Jrstewartarch , Thank you for the response!

Before choosing Hive, did you look at the other software available? I ask only because the characteristics you describe - while all being awesome! - seem to be typical for all of them.

The one point I've found that Hive outstands all the others is its price-point. Which is good for me, but I just want to be as thorough as possible.

Yes I looked at all the others and for sure the price point was the best with HIVE.  Also we were already using a couple of their other add-ons.

We are on the same boat... we checked the same apps as all of you. Currently, we are testing Avail and Unifi waiting for user feedback before move on purchasing the application.

What I found challenging here is to organize the existing content. We can have the best tool o the market but without a procedure in how to validate existing content and purge un use the tool is worthless.

Will a content management tool prevent the users from getting the content from an old project?

g.pardo, I appreciate your viewpoint and understand it as well. If I remember correctly, at least one of the other tools (Avail?) had just that feature that could audit and review where the families were from and whether they were from that management tool or not. I also think this is something that could be done via Dynamo to at least help create the list. We are also looking at tools like that which now comes with Hive (and similar to Avail) that is a regular data mining and analytics tool that includes information such as that. You are likely already aware of these, but I thought I'd share.

If I am not mistaken (I am still a bit new with these)

  • Unifi- Same named content with different versions in the database without creating additional "buckets" and funneling that back into the browser.
    • Revit has to upgrade all content from older versions on the fly - not too big of a deal
    • Newer features available in families may not be available because of this
  • UNIFI Doesn't support all file formats - recently added SKP and something else - Avail will handle any registered format

Both Avail and Unifi allow drag and drop, Both integrate direct to revit

Could use a BIG spreadsheet/chart with tick boxes and exceptions to the boxes for all these Aggregators!

@GallowayUS_com_RonAllen1 ,you are able to store all file formats in UNIFI, you aren't limited to only your BIM content or SKP files. UNIFI also upgrades your files in the cloud so when you need to load a 2020 piece of content from a 2018 base file, there is no wait time on your end for upgrading that content separately. UNIFI can also store multiple base files under the same content name, so if your Revit content needs to update due to newer features, you can maintain versioning as needed to accommodate this.

the new boy on the block! AjourObjects replaces the local pathfinder and warehouse files with a database in the cloud. You are ensured uniform data which is always available and updated. In AjourObjects the search for objects is done directly in Revit by means of a simple toolbar in Revit´s ribbon.

Our office is looking at different options for which is the best content management platform to get. We like the features that both CTC HIVE and UNIFI although the project health analytics and version control from UNIFI look very helpful but UNIFI is more expensive that CTC HIVE. Since we already have the BIM List Browser and other CTC tools we are leaning towards CTC HIVE for an easier transition, support and training from CTC.

Avail - and not just for Revit.

Avail is content agnostic "pointer" and meta tag filter / manager...

You may also want to evaluate AGACAD Smart Browser.  I find their system very robust and easy to compartmentalize families by project type, set the necessary role protections, and easy batch editing of hundreds of families at a time.

Website Link: AGACAD Smart Browser

Also, I recently created a program called Family Type Manager that uses recursive permutations to generate hundreds to thousands of Revit family types in seconds.   The program is a data management solution to bulk edit Type Catalog data, Lookup Tables, Unit of Measure conversions, it has all 740 Revit parameter configurations, and many other powerful features.  Then all family data files can be uploaded into any content management system.
