Revit 2017 Opening Time

Hi everyone.

I am working a contractor company which is constructing mega buildings. We have lots of high size models like 200-300 mb without links 1-1.5 gb with links. I have 2 pc one is laptop the other is desktop. Desktops configurations are higher than laptop. However, opening time of same revit file with same links or worksets is less than 10 minutes with laptop, on the other hand more than 2 hour with desktop. How could something like this? What can I do?

Thank you for answering.

No matter how big the project is, the files are way too big.

You have to split as much as possible.
You are not allowed to import DWGS.
You are not allowed to download any items (furniture, windows, doors, etc. from the internet). The degree of detail of the downloaded items is usually very high, which suffers the performance.
You also have to clean your machine regularly.

DWGS, views, plans, etc which are not needed you have to delete

You have to solve the file rules of the central file and often publish a new master file, this is the file size goes down.

I hope I could help you who yes dan please give a kudo or accept this proposal as a solution.

Best Regards

Thank you for answering quickly. As I said, I tried with 2 different pc to open same file. Don't think about splitting, worksets or something different. Every think is same. File path is same also. I am using same brand of ssd.  I have been up to date also. As I said again, laptop (thats configurations is less than desktop) can open it in less than 10 minutes. But the other desktop "lets say monster'' cannot open in 1 hour. My doubt is maybe I have changed the settings of Revit on my desktop and I dont know what did I do.

Hi @ErenSaygili

Can you confirm if Revit 2017 is on the same build with latest updates on both these machines?

Send us the configuration of the desktop and laptop and also a journal from each with a Revit session.

Please see the Model Performance Technical Note for Revit 2017

Some general tips and tricks that will help you to keep the size and performance of your Revit files under control:

  • Break up a large model into multiple files and link the files together if you are experiencing performance issues. This will work best if you can work on one file while the other links are unloaded most of the time.
  • Purge unused objects. (Note: Purged objects cannot be recovered, so please make a backup of your project before purging.)
  • Remove any unused design options. Even though options may not be active or visible, when changes are made within the main model, all design options have to be updated.
  • Remove unwanted raster images or renderings, as they can quickly increase file size.
  • Do not import a very large raster image and then scale it down to fit the title block. It will retain its original file size.
  • Black and white raster images are smaller than color raster images. Save black and white raster images in 1-bit per pixel format instead of JPG. (In Microsoft Paint, this format is called Monochrome Bitmap.)
  • Remove unused groups. Delete them from the Project Browser if they exist instead of using the Purge command.
  • Create a new, blank drafting view to be used for opening and closing the project. Before saving and closing, open this view and close any other open views. This will prevent unused views from being loaded during startup, freeing up RAM memory and increasing speed.
  • Regularly review and fix warnings (click Tools menu > Review Warnings).
  • Reduce unwanted data.
  • Consider enabling the worksharing feature and implementing worksets by zones.

Let me know if this helps and if you have additional questions!

Firstly, I checked the Revit versions and two of them is up to date.

Laptop configurations are;

  • CPU: 2.9GHz Intel Xeon E3-1535M v5 w/8MB Smart Cache
  • Memory: 24GB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro M5000M w/8GB GDDR5 memory
  • LCD: 17.3-in. UHD 3840×2160 wide view anti-glare backlit IGZO
  • Hard Disk: 1024 GB 7200rpm 2.5-in. HD
  • SSD: 275 GB Crucial_CT275mx300ssd4

Desktop Configurations are;

  • CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4 2.1 GHz 2.1 GHz (2 processors)
  • Memory: 64GB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro M4000
  • LCD: 17.3-in. UHD 3840×2160 wide view anti-glare backlit IGZO
  • Hard Disk: 1024 GB 7200rpm
  • SSD: 240x2 GB Kingston SA1000M8240G

Journals are also attached. As you see, the same file is opened with the laptop in 3 minutes, but with the desktop, it took more than 1 hour. It was one of the smallest model of our project.

Hi @ErenSaygili

Your journal indicates that you are not on the same build, please update to Revit 2017.2.3 and let me know if there is any difference.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have updated and send you new journals.  And I have a look on them, I found out one of the most different timer parts. But I did not understand the reason. I added it in attachment. Thank you for your helpfulness.

Hi @ErenSaygili

Thanks for your response. Do you see an improvement after you've updated Revit?

I will parse your journals for errors and let you know if I need more information.

I didn`t see any differences after updating it. One of them took 3 minutes, the other one took more than 1 hour.  If you analyze the journal, you will see the time differences. of course, you can want whatever you need.  I need a Revit doctor.

The other applications (Navisworks, AutoCAD etc.) have no problem.

From the hardware specs, the laptop looks to be the more "powerful" of the two (RAM not withstanding) by a slim margin.

You should consider factors outside of Revit i.e. anti-virus/malware scanning may be selectively disabled on the laptop but fully scanning everything on the desktop.  You don't mention whether both computers are using the same physical network connection; if they are different try switching cables and see if there is a performance difference.

Hi  @ErenSaygili

Can you try a clean uninstall and reinstall of Revit?

Empty your temp folder.

Let me know if this helps.

Regards,

I already try the reinstalling. But the only thing that I did is remove Revit 2017 and reinstall again. Today I will follow the steps, in the link that you write there, one by one. Is there any important point to follow about completely reinstaling?

Hi again,

I reinstall it with using your link step by step. But nothing changed. It takes more than one hour. I tried same file with another ones same desktop that has same configuration. It is working very good. So what is the problem about me?

@ErenSaygili

Can you please share a recent journal from your machine? I can test further.

Let me know if you need information of locating on a journal.

Thanks,
