Color by Phase

How can I have a view that color codes the phases?

This is what I'm looking for, except here they used Worksets.

Surprisingly enough, View Filters do not allow users to select phases!!! (perhaps I'm doing something wrong?)

Any idea on how to solve this issue?

As you have discovered view filters do not "see" the phase created parameter of elements which is what you would need to do in order to get an image like you are showing.

You can create some other parameter and use that as the filter control, but it would have to be manually coordinated, it would not automatically read the phase value of the element.

- Create a multi category schedule including all model elements.
- Add a text parameter called 'Phase for coloring', sort by this field, uncheck 'itemized every instance'. Schedule should be one row.
- Set the schedule view to each Phase, enter the Phase ID for 'Phase for coloring', e.g. Phase 1
- Repeat for other Phases
- Go back to 3D view, create View Filters based on 'Phase for coloring'
- Override surface color for each filter.

In this case I would probably use Dynamo. Add a (project)parameter to the relevant categories. Then use Dynamo to read the phase form the object and store the value in the new parameter. Then you can filter on this new parameter.

Also consider to vote on ideas relating to this subject like THIS one.

Hi @loboarch,

I've seen the solution to add a secondary manual phasing property, but this seem to go directly against the whole idea of BIM: Removing manual work and duplicate efforts that need to be synchronized.

I don't understand why Phasing would not simply be accessible from the properties? This seems like a basic component of any schedule. This seems like basic information that you would want to access without adding another layer of manual complexity, something that should work out of the box?

I don't think I understand why this is not available as a regular property? It seems like a limitation rather than something that was designed for a reason.

Thanks,

Sam

I understand why you want to use phasing parameters this way. You can set a schedule to "look" at a phase and only report items from that phase. When phasing was introduced to Revit  (a long time ago) this was what the designed workflow was. At the time visibility filters for properties on elements did not exist. I am not sure "why" phasing parameters were not exposed when visibility filters were introduced. I can only speculate it was because the phasing tools offered some control in this area, not as flexible as using properties based visibility filters but it did exist.

You can submit (or search) for this idea on the Revit Idea Station and suggest to the product team for future development.

@loboarch 14 Votes in 4 days, not bad. It seems there would be a need for something like this.

Now if only my inbox would calm down...

Once it reaches 50 (I think?) the Product Management team will review the request and make some kind of decision on it.

I found a good solution for my phasing issue.

I create a "project parameter" called "Existente" with "yes/no" marker... and then I create a filter to control this parameter... every time i create a phase like "new", "existente" or "relocated" I can tick the marker and the filter will applying the desired  color to my model... In the project parameter you can chose all the families it must dysplay like "Wall", "Windows", "floor", etc.

I hope you found a better way to overlook this.

Sorry about my english, is my second language... I hope I make my self clear.

Hi,

I advise to you to use the free plug-in "Color Splasher" from BIM ONE who can identify the "Phase created" parameter.

In my sample I have only generic models but you can select severals Categories.

I am aware of this plugin for the manual workaround. In this use case, it would require me to run the plugin every single time I look at the view.

I would much rather Revit let us use these tool automatically by allowing phases to be captured in filters or by creating a specific tool that updates itself.

This is too intense as it will be applied everywhere in the project. I'm looking for the exact same thing as turning on and off the ability to see workset ownership's live data.

Then you need another parameter as already suggested.

Autodesk is adding Worksets to schedules, they are slowly learning make the parameters we need accessible where we need them. Perhaps they will listen to us and allow us to filter by phasing.

You can sit around waiting for a new feature or you can solve the issue for yourself. The choice is yours.

I'm aware of the bad or annoying workarounds. Thankfully I'm not a full time Revit user right now so I have the luxury of waiting.

This should probably transform into an "Idea" to let users access all parameter in filters.

And also for automatic filtering that captures all possible parameters and assigns colors to them.

The BIMOne Tool is also pretty good, despite its imperfections, I've submitted some suggested improvements directly to them as well.

Wow, really? Is that what you call solutions?

It already is and you should go over there. This forum is for solutions, or if you prefer, workarounds.

Good luck!
