Can't change dimension segment to this value error.

I have used these forums an others for years now, and this is the first time I've been unable to find an answer.

This is a random issue (as far as I can tell), where I select an object and click on the dimension value, type in the new value I want it to have, press 'Enter':

"Can't change dimension segment to this value."

This has happened with model objects, reference planes, and design lines. The only thing that seems consistent is I'm usually in a plan view when it happens (but that's where I spend most of my time anyway).

Sometimes the problem is solved by shutting down and restarting, other times it persists through that. I have deleted the element and redone it only to get mixed results, sometimes its fine, other times it's still an issue.

Google pulls in a handful of hits for that exact error, but none of them have been helpful.

I have only been noticing it for the past ~12-18 months, but it's starting to get to me. I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks

It also happened to me when I changed the witness lines.

This helped for changing some but not all dimensions:

Manage→ Additional Settings→ Temporary Dimensions→ Select where you want the grips to appear on walls

We are using Revit 1019 at our office and I have had this issue everytime I try to adjust the temporary witness lines to the exterior of a wall verse the default core of the wall.  If I leave them, no problem it changes fine, but if I change the witness lines that error pops up everytime.

It is a real problem, slows down the drafting and design process. This has
been going on for a long time now and REVIT refuses to acknowledge and fix
it.

How do you know? Have you actually asked Revit about it? What was its response?

Rob

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Well, what was the response? I doubt that they said they are refusing to fix it.

This was months ago and "THEY" said they would look at it or something to that effect.. Bottom line is they have known about this and still have not fixed it.

I am just starting to learn about Revit and incorporating it into my high school classroom.  I came across this trying to fix the same problem.  We were trying to dimension to the outside of are walls when we had the issue.  If we changed the extension lines to the center-line of the wall, we would add the wall thickness to make the dimension correct.  It seems to be working for us, but certainly not ideal.  Would love to see a better solution.

I am having the same issue when I am trying to move was to specific dimensions. I need to manually move the walls. Very frustrating and waste of time. Please give us a solution. Thank you!

Hi All,

I had the same issue.  So i did a test and drew new walls parallel to the walls that were giving me the error.  They re-adjusted fine so i tested other walls in other parts of my project they were fine.  So i figured my wall may have become slightly off axis at that point so i deleted it and replaced it with a wall i knew to be at 90 degrees and no more error.  I think the original wall went off axis when i was tracing some plans earlier in the project.  Either way I have noticed a lot of my errors are typically solved due to an axis issue.

@Anonymous: I can't open your file right now, but if I did I would look for a Hidden Constraint. Activate Hidden Constraints on your View Control dashboard and check it out. Bet you find a red dimension in either Plan or Elevation View.

I checked if there were any constraints on any elevations and none were displayed, nor on the levels. Weirdly when I tried to adjust the dimension on level 2 (had level 1 highlighted then went to level 2 floorplan) though it didn't go up past level 2 I was able to adjust the dimension (see below)

Something weird is going on at your end, because I just opened your project and cannot replicate what you are showing in your .mp4 video.  No errors being thrown on my end. I can change the location of the walls just fine.

This is very helpful! For me it solves the problem discussed here, thanks!

Seems this has been an ongoing issue for a long time.
I created a new project - 4 walls, parallel / perpendicular. Picked a wall, changed the temporary dimension line, and ERROR. The funny thing is that it actually moves to the new location, but won't stay. (see image)
I tried the temp dim settings above, and nothing.
Revit 2019 file and screenshot attached.

kind of a convoluted solution, but if you delete the dimension, then move the object constrained and disjoined, it should work, then put all the dimensions back. Granted then you have to figure out the amount to move and it requires more work, but that is not new with Revit, more unnecessary work is normal, apparently.
