Can't Adjust Material Patterns on a Family

I have a family that was built and I want to wrap that component in stone. First, I simply changed the material inside the family. Later I added a parameter to change the material as some will be stone and some will be metal. The pattern, however, is not symmetrical to the component. I have tried Align, Move, even clicking and dragging, to get the pattern where it needs to be, but it moves the entire component, not just that hatch. Someone at my office suggested I just use Paint, but that just sounds crazy inefficient. I feel like there should be a better way.Annotation 2019-06-11 104224.jpgAnnotation 2019-06-11 104224.jpg

You trying to manipulate a Hatch Patch? It needs to be a Model Hatch Pattern.

...oops. I think I misread. You are taking about adjusting a Family's Hatch Pattern inside the Project; right?  No can do. Paint won't even work.

It is a Model Pattern. the same material is applied to the walls and I can adjust those fine. It is only when I apply it to a generic model family that I have issues.

Are these pre-manufactured or built on site?   If they are built on site, I'd would model these as embedded wall types in the Project itself. 

 

Here's a rough idea of what I'm talking about (file attached).

You cannot modify material surface pattern alignment of a family in the project.  The suggestion to use Paint in the project is only viable if you change the family to Architectural Column category.  The most flexible way is model it directly in project using system components such as walls, curtain walls, etc...

This answers the question I had, but I think that it is dumb that it would be impossible to make the exact same material align between a family and the wall it is hosted to. Thanks though for the help!

So what was the solution?  A confirmation that you can't do what you want to do in the way that you would like to do it?  Dang, I could have just stopped at the information I gave you in Post #2.  "No can do".

For what you show I would definitely model them as Wall Sweeps in project.

TMI=Too much information.  

 

But, just between me, you and a lamppost, I would actually model it as it will be built. That is, I would not use just a Wall Sweep.  I'd duplicate the existing Wall Type, remove the Interior Finish Layers and frame three sides of the pop-out with this duplicate Wall Type (stud-to-stud contact).  Then I'd create a Floor Type  with the same core and finish layers as the Wall, and use this Floor to model the bottom and top of the pop-out.  I'd probably add a 1/4" to 1'-0" slope  to the top for proper drainage.  Then I'd clean it up by Joining everything and aligning the Surfaces' Hatch Patterns.  If I needed more than one Instance, I'd Group the elements, place Instance of Group, Ungroup Instance and then cleanup.  

 

But that's just me.  I got a BIM mentality.

Sorry, I stopped receiving notifications to my email. I didn't see the your comment telling me "no good" at the end of your post.

 

The reason we didn't model them as walls and floors was because it was quickly starting to interfere with the adjacent elements. See below for the detail. The detail is a combination of stone systems: Adhered veneer to the structural elements we couldn't move, Clipped Veneer (elsewhere in the project where the structure wasn't a conflict), and Full sized stone. We decided to make the family and have a detail group that we could paste onto the model family. 

 

I think the sweep will at least let the patterns align. Thanks for the help both of you!

Hey, I managed to align the material patterns when I did the actual aligning in the family (meaning in that place where the family is built in the first place).

I found out that you can add a similar or same material inside the family itself, then you can add a parameter that you may adjust after loading family into the project file.

 

I tested this on Revit 2021, also I changed the material to something else that doesn't have a "model pattern"  then revert back to original material; to check for any errors and it does not seem to produce any.

 

Try this method and check if solves your need
