Best Practice: Importing LARGE CAD files into REVIT

Dear Community,

I have +20 9mb CAD files linked into my Revit project. They dramatically slow computer performance.

Are there any best practices out there to increase computer performance in the Revit project; or the CAD file.

I'm sure many would find this useful.

The first thing I do is to make sure that the CAD drawing is not bigger than 30 Kilometers from the "Project Base Point" in Revit. If it is bigger there are some ways to make it run, but generaly it is better to fit into that size for an architecture project. 

Typical fails in these topics are:

1. Little lost lines or blocks floting over the infinity in the CAD document. Maybe they can even be in 3D at a great height.

Solution ---> find and purge them.

2. The scale of the insertion from the "CAD units" to the "milimetres, metres or specific units in Revit. Sometimes we insert the CAD document in the wrong scale.

Solution ---> think about what abstract CAD units you have before importing the drawing in Revit real units.

3. Insertion point. If the CAD drawing is placed far away from the CAD "0,0,0" Origin. If we import the CAD using that origin it can be like placing 60Km drawing in the model.  

Solution ---> Try to get near the drawing to de CAD Origin before importing it.

Some things to consider. Avoid using CAD drawings. Clean up CAD files before linking. Even when working on a project alone I make use of worksets. I place those links on one or more separate worksets. Depending on what I am working on I can avoid loading those files or close those worksets if not needed.
