Assign Built-In Parameters to Geometry

I am working to understand how curtain wall panels/door/windows work.  The family comes with built-in width and height parameters that are instance(?) based, flexing to fix the opening.  How do I assign those parameters to geometry?  The parameters are not available for assignment to a dimension.

 

IE, I have a nested family that I want to flex to fill the curtain wall opening, but I cannot find where I assign the width and height built-in parameter to a parameter in the nested family.

To change the preset dimension to instance, simply go into the dimension and select it. Here you have the option to turn the preset dimension into instance parameter

As for curtainwall, you have to add dimension and set it as reporting parameter. Then all your nested family will use this as reference.

Revit flexes the family based on the reference planes that are in the template. You constrain the forms to those reference planes and width and height are determined by the curtain grids in the project environment. There is no need to define width and height parameters, Revit flexes everything you attach to them in the project based on the curtain grids.

 

You do need to create constraints between those reference planes for any forms that you want to flex relative to the curtain grids. For example, if you are modeling a custom mullion frame or different panels shapes within the overall curtain panel.

I must have deleted something that I shouldn’t have when working through the process.  I could not assign the built-in width parameter to my nested object, as it would throw a reporting warning.  I couldn’t create a new reporting width parameter, as I would get this error.

I started from scratch and everything went fine.
