AreaSchedule subtotals

I am still somewhat new to Revit and I can't figure out how to manipulate the Area Schedule to show calculate sub totals.

Ideally, I woulod want to calculate it like this:

Lower Level Living Area: 2000 SF

Upper Level Living Area: 500 SF

Total Living Area: 2500 SF

Triple Garage: 850 SF

Cov'd. Porch: 200 SF

Cov'd. Patio: 300 SF

Masonry Lug: 50 SF

Total Frame: 3850 SF

Total Slab: 3900 SF

Total Cov'd.: 3900 SF

Right Now, it simply gives me the area calculations for each individual space.

How can I get Revit to add certain areas in order to give me subtotals for each area I want to represent?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have spent MANY hours searching for the solution and can't find anything.

Format Tab:  set Area field to Calculate Totals

Sorting/Grouping Tab:  Sorted by the Area Identity you want to group together and untick Itemize every instance at the bottom

When I click on Sorting/Grouping tab, it tells me to sort by Name / Area. It doesn't give me the individual spaces I have named.

Shouldn't it list all the areas I have named so, I can group them together?

You need to classify the Areas into different categories matching what you want to group.  You can use any identity parameter such as Comments, Area Type name to enter the category.  Then add that parameter to the schedule and use it to group the areas.

Feel free to share the file.

Do you mean Itemize? There a checkbox for that as well. Or , maybe you mean grouping totals as Headers or Footers? There's a checkbox for that as well.  Works in conjunction with calculate totals on Format tab. .

So, would I be able to assign a space to 2 separate categories? For instance - the masonry Lugs and all the other spaces would contribute to the Total Slab subtotal but, not everything will contribute to the Total Frame category. Same goes for the Total Covered Area.

You can add a Yes/No parameter for each group: Living Area, Framing Area, Covered Area, etc...  and check the boxes in the matrix where the criteria match.  For the Area summary though you will need to have more than one schedules.

Maybe...

I'm just trying to get it to calculate the totals of the areas that would calculate the Total Slab, Total Living Area, Total Framed Area and Total Covered Areas.

I would need to (somehow) group the 1st Floor and 2nd Floor areas - So they would calculate a TOTAL Living Area.

Same for the other spaces.

Total Slab would be the total area of the Masonry Lugs, 1st Floor Living Area, Triple Garage and both Cov'd. Porches.

Total Cov'd Area would be the total of everything

Total Frame would be the total of everything (except) masonry Lugs.

Frustrating I know.

From this description I think it maybe able to include the summary in a single schedule.  Share the file if you can.

Group by Comments.  Add your Comment Parameter Field to Schedule and put values in the Comment field which you can use to sort by.

Is there a way I could generate several different area plans and just draw polylines differently on each one?

For instance - couldn't I draw:

1 area plan for the Total Living Area

1 area plan for the Total Cov'd. Area

1 area plan for the Total Frame Area

1 area Plan for the Total Slab Area?

See the attached.  The matrix may not be correct as I did it in a hurry but if tick/untick all the boxes correctly then the outcome should be correct.

You can create different Area schemes, create an Area plan for each scheme, and draw the boundaries and the areas independently from one to another.

@ToanDN  can you tell me how you did that. That's exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks Buddy!

I added Yes/No parameters to create the matrix and add Calculated Value parameters with formulas based on the Yes/No.  See attached.

I'm trying to replicate the Area Schedule you did last night (Awesome BTW Thanks!) I have been able to replicate most of the settings (by going back and forth and making all the new fields match yours). I can't seem to get the headings to show up though. The columns (on the replicated schedule) still read A,B,C, Etc.

2 questions:

1. Can you tell me if there's a way I can save the Master Matrix Schedule for use in other projects?

2. I'm having a hard time understanding the formula: if(Slab, Area, 0 SF) Can you explain it? I want to understand what I'm doing and how it works so, I don't have to keep begging for help.

To change the heading, edit the schedule, click in the cell in the schedule and type in; or go to Format tab, select the field and type in the Heading box.  It does not rename the actual field names, just how they appear on the schedule

1. Can you tell me if there's a way I can save the Master Matrix Schedule for use in other projects?

Highlight the schedule in the browser, CTRL+C to copyclip, open another project and any view or sheet, CTRL+V to paste.  It will show in the browser of the other project.

formula: if (Slab, Area, 0 SF)

translation: if the Slab field is Yes then use the value of the Area field, if not then use 0 SF)

Another Question:

I am working on a project that has Masonry Lugs the don't all connect. On the Area Plan, I have labeled them (individually) as "Masonry Lug." Now, I have 11 entries (on the Area Schedule) that say "Masonry Lug."

Is there a way I can group all of them together so there is just one entry that combines the totals of all?
