Area Boundary Line Graying Out

We are doing a Gross FAR Calculation of a project and when we apply a template to our sheet it automatically makes the Area Boundary lines change to gray. We have created a new template to see if that was the problem. We have tried overriding and changing everything in the visibility graphics and within the template itself to no avail. We have even tried Overriding the graphics in the view by each element and that has not worked either. 

This seems to happen whenever we associate any template with a sheet that includes Area Boundaries. If anyone has some insight on this that would be greatly appreciated. We haven't been able to find any answers online. 

*Attached is a screenshot of our plan. The boundary lines are marked by the red arrows.

Curious. Is it Phase related? If you can post Revit file, it might help expedite a solution for you.

No, that's a good idea though. We just double checked to make sure and we haven't been using Phases at all for this project. We are all new construction right now with no graphic overrides or changes.

What is the discipline in the template defining for the view?  If your changing it to anything other then Architectural or coordination it will make them gray.  Is the Lines category being set to halftone in the template?  I cant think of anything else that would do this.

Hi Nate, 

We checked the discipline and it was set to architectural. We switched back and forth between other ones such as structural and it grayed out our walls but our boundary lines for our areas did not change. We also checked the halftone and that was not turned on anywhere either. 

The problem is that the area boundary lines that are normally dashed-black are appearing dashed-gray within our FAR template and we have no way to control that line type. However, I did some more digging and I was able to find a work around for this problem.

We followed the steps laid out, making sure to turn on "interior fill". We were then able to manipulate the outline of our defined areas. The next problem that arrived was that our Area Boundary Lines (what we used to create our areas) were on top of our actual Area perimeter outlines and we were not able to change their order. So what we did is hide (turn off in the template) our Boundary lines therefore all that showed up was our editable Area Perimeter Outlines that are controllable within our view filters. Voila! 

If anyone has a better idea to fix this problem please let us know! There are downsides to this workaround. 

*Side note: The only problem to this workaround is that if we want to edit our areas we need to turn our boundary lines back on.

*Side note: The view filters that control the area perimeter outlines need to be changed in each view. Creating a filter for our areas within our template did not fix the problem.

Why couldn't you just change the Line Style for Area Boundary (under Additional Setting) and not do the Interior Fill?

Well we tried to do that initially and everything works. We can change the color, the weight, and the line style but it still appears with halftone; even though halftone isn't turned on in the line visibility override section . So somewhere we are assuming there is an override but we have looked everywhere and cant seem to find it.

Question: What kind of line is it? What's it called out as in Properties?

In the properties section it's labeled as an area boundary. I included two pictures showing the properties sections and the visibility settings. I changed the lines to red and solid so they stand out but as you can see in the image they are still halftone red.

I see "workset 1" in your screen-shot. "Gray Inactive Worksets"?

Workset 1 is our active workset and the Area Boundary Lines were drawn on that workset as well. Also the Gray Inactive Worksets is not turned on.

I'm wondering if it is just a bug that is in the system because we remade our template and it was still making our boundary lines halftone.

Very strange. The only time I've seen Area Boundary Lines displayed halftone like that, is when they were part of another Design Option. Clearly, I can see from your screen shot that this is not the case. Just curious though: can you Isolate in View a single Area Boundary line? Does it still display halftoned when it isolated?

Yes, when I isolate the element (area boundary line) it is still halftoned.

I had the same problem, and it turns out the plan isn't an Area plan, check if you are in an Area plan.
