Families will align to others by their own geometry itself. Reference planes are not necessary for alignment. The terms "weak" and "strong" are more related to how the user finds a reference plane in the project, for creating dimensions. "No reference" means the user won't see the plane in the project. "Weak" means the user will see if he/she uses the Tab key to find it. "Strong" means the user will see it just by hovering the mouse over the family.

Hi @Anonymous,

This all depends on how the family is built, but generally you can align center point of a circle to another part of the model. Here is some information on aligning elements.

Place a screw on a face of a panel, align it and lock.

Ribbon> Align> hover over the hole > the axis will appear, pick it then hover over a screw untill you see an axis highlighted> pick > screw will be aligned, pick a padlock, repeat with the other axis of a hole and a screw (orthogonal to the first one).

You align them just like you normally align other things.  I don't understand why you need a "best way" for such a simple operation.

Is there anything prohibit you from switching to a 2D view to align things then switching back to the 3D view?

If you must work in 3D views, then draw model lines to present centerlines of the holes in the host file, and draw model lines to present centerlines of the bolt in the bolt family, then use them as aligning references. Total unnecessary in my opinion.
