Add an Image to IFC file and export it to a new IFC file with following Image

Hi guys:), 

Got a challenge here!

I have a IFC file how are a road sign, and I need to add an image (BMP) into this sign and save this to new IFC file including added image. I have tried several times but the image will not follow unfortunately.    

I'm new to Revit and BIM system, I really appreciate any help around this challenge. 

I would love a tutorial video how explains this if its to be found.

Images do not transfer/export with the IFC (Reason: Neither IFC format intended for Image encoding not do the images need to be encoded - in other words it is extra unnecessary weight to the IFC file)

What is usually done (either manually of by the exporter) the images get packed separately and reload into the IFC at the other end when it is opened/imported/linked

Example: When you link an IFC into revit, a file with the extension *.ifc.rvt is generated. 

•  If the original IFC had material defined or paint,
  1. simply open the .rvt.ifc 
  2. Either import the material assets from a Template/Project where it exists Or simple add the image to an existing asset
  3. save the .rvt.ifc 
  4. Reload in the Link in the model and the images from the material assets will show 

• Alternatively, if the original IFC had no material assigned, the image can be applied in the current IFC as a decal image

Thank you for your quick respond.

So if I understand you correct, its not possible to get this process done and the easiest way are to use decal image form Revit program.

Sorry I’m kind of blank into this field and BIM programs.

Just a example on how our costumer need this to be.

Just to explain better.

This is received ifc file

I can add image to this and get

[cid:image002.png@01D82A2A.29EC61A0]
this file RVT.IFC file and it Works.

But exporting the RVT.ifc file to ifc will not work.

Our costumer need to get IFC file as shown below

Hope this clarifies my challege

 I am really sorry but honestly not sure what to answer...you need to refer back to reply number 2. I really cannot explain it any better or in more detail

Are you looking for a Yes or No kinda answer?!  Because then it is easy, simply tell your client No can't do and the nightmare is over 🙂
