2016 R2 PDF printing issues....

Anonymous

Have been using Adobe Acrobat Pro as my pdf printer for years with no issues.........Now since updating ro R2, having all kinds of issues with pdf's.......

1.  If I've done any editing of anything, the pdf printer just sits there and the progress bar does absolutely nothing.  I am forced to shut down REVIT, Relaunch, reopen Project and start Print reoutine all over again...................Once Pdf pops up for review , the PDF Progress bar consistanly show around 75-80% done, but then nothing..I've waited as long as 15minutes for it to complete.....alas still hangs...........

2. If after completeing one 'print routine in pdf', I try to Immediately start another with different params,  the PDF Progress dialog pops up......then absolutely nothing happens..............have waited as long as 1-hr just to see..nothing...............Have to shut down REVIt, and again relaunch, etc..........

3. Also noticed a new PROCESS runnning now.....Something called "REVIT WORKER.EXE".........wha is this now?????

See attached scrn shot for pdf window...........

Keith,

I ran a test with the my original settings 1200 dpi using Revit 2016 R2. And the problem seem to still be there. It took roughly 10 minutes for on sheet to print as apposted to less than 10 sec. for the same sheet using 600 dpi. I also used the masking region in place of irregular viewport and it took less the 5 sec.

thanks.

Did we ever establish if @Anonymous problem was solved by removing irreglar crop regions?

While we are discussing pdf issues, could someone possibly shed so light on another problem I'm having with objects being masked when they shouldn't be.

The first image shows how the pdf output should look and the second show what is being output.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

@Keith_Wilkinson I don't think we've confirmed that the issue that Mike reported (introduced when installing 2016 R2) was related to non-rectangular crop regions.

@Anonymous when testing this, can you also verify if there are background processes running (as mentioned earlier)?

Lance, I just saw this AFTER I ran the tests.......but I did rerun a set with my original settings for the crops as before..open the processes window, AND opened Tack manager to see what was going on...... Task Manager show the REVIT WORKER launching when I launched Revit.......BUT when I ran the Print routine for the Adobe pdf..I had the Process open, and all I got a Grey background in the wi dow with the message: "No Background Calculations in Progress"

Okay, Here's my results..

A. SETUP: Went back into Model and RESET ALL Irregular Views so they were all Rectangular...Printed w/Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 + updates....1200dpi....color...41 sheets..Combined into 1 pdf

RESULTS: Took 10min to Generate the 1 pdf...Print Status wdw(Pop up) worked as it used to before R2.

B. IMMEDIATELY went back into print routine.... Left all Setting same EXCEPT for dpi.reset to 600.generated print 41 sheets.Combined...

RESULTS: No significant "time to generate" change, file size slightly smaller (2.5 mb)..Print Status Wdw worked as before R2.

@Anonymous Thank you for the detailed information on your testing. It sounds like in your first test, the hang with the PDF window is not occurring with irregular crop regions removed (and changing the DPI on second print).

Have you been able to confirm that if the irregular crops are not removed (or you don’t change the DPI) that the hang up is still consistently occurring (i.e. hang up occurs with irregular crops and doesn't without them)?

Regarding the RevitWorker process, I would expect it to start with Revit, but much of the time it would be idle. If it is working, then that Background Process window should show what it is doing.

Any updates on this issue from anyone... we have it happening on 2 projects out of dozens in the office.  Users on one of the projects could not print until they deleted all the room and area color fills from the project and replaced them with filled regions.  On the other project they have been able to work around it by creating a new central file every day.  They new central file come with it's own baggage because the color fills reset to factory default "skittle" colors each time.

Other projects in the office are working in R2 with no problem at all, using the same standards, same machines, same configuration of Revit... so we think it's an issue between some project characteristic and Revit 2016 R2.

It's too bag because there's been so many great bug fixes lately we were lulled into thinking that updates are risk free.

@andrebaros Have you been checking if everyone is using the same PDF producer (as well as the same version(s) of the PDF producer)?

Yes, we're all standardized on Bluebeam. We've traced the problem to the background process for room fills. When those are all removed and replaced with filled regions, the issue goes away. But I'll double check that there were no rogue PDF settings. Thanks, Andre

@andrebaros Have you verified that everyone is using the same update version of Bluebeam (especially comparing those experiencing the issue with those that are not)?

If Ranges are being used in your Color Scheme definitions, try changing these to specific values and see if the hang-ups continue.

I’ve documented this issue in the following article (you can keep an eye on this for updates):

Update 1 for 2016 R2 has been released and should address the color calculations issues introduced in R2. (The article above has more info on options for downloading the update.)

(It might take an hour or so for the link above to update, if you don't see info on Update 1 in the link above, check back a bit later.)

We'll test this next year and let you know how it goes. This was quite the frustrating error so we're glad to see the fix.

The update would only show up if your account has been granted access (by the contract manager) to the Revit product.

Do you see Revit available for download, or other updates for Revit?
