12"x36" Herringbone .pat file help

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to create a custom .pat file once again and I'm still not sure what I'm doing wrong.

This is what I have so far:

*Herringbone 12x36, herringbone

;%TYPE=MODEL

45, 0, 0, 12, -12, 48, -24

135, ?, ?, 12, -12, 48, -24

I still dont really understand how I get the 2nd and 3rd number in the second row. Previously someone told me that it is "approximation for 3 times the square root of 2, or the horizontal and vertical projections of a 6-unit long line drawn at 45 degrees." I'm just curious how you got the number 3 and 2.  An explanation would be helpful.

Thanks!

I am not a herringbone expert, but I don't believe you can make a 12 x 36 herringbone, and I have no idea what your 48,-24 means. I can't tell exactly what you are trying to accomplish, but I can make a herringbone pattern.

If you start by making the pattern orthagonal, your perpendicular line needs to be offset 12 inches in the x direction and 0 inches in the y direction, like this:

*Herringbone 12x24-Ortho , herringbone
;%TYPE=MODEL
0, 0, 0, 12, 12, 36, -12
90, 12, 0, 12, -12, 36, -12

When you rotate this 45 degrees, you create a 45-45-90 triangle. For this triangle, if each leg is 1, the hypotenuse is the square root of 2. If the hypotenuse is 1, each leg is 1 divided by the square root of 2.

In this case the hypotenuse is 12. 12 divided by the square root of 2 = 8.48528137423857. Here is your rotated herringbone:

*Herringbone 12x24 herringbone
;%TYPE=MODEL
45, 0, 0, 12, 12, 36, -12
135, 8.48528137423857, 8.48528137423857, 12, -12, 36, -12

Try this. We have just added Herringbone patterns to HatchKit's Brick&Tile Wizard:

Thanks for your help! I'm making a herringbone layout with carpet tiles in a space, which is why it is an odd dimension of 12"x36"

sure:, HatchKit's Brick and Tile wizard now creates herringbone of arbitrary size and weave:

;-HatchKit Version                       : 3.1.10.2725
;-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
;%VERSION=3.0
;%UNITS=MM
*300x75,LEFT-HAND 300mmx75mm weave=1/1
;%TYPE=MODEL
0,0,0,75,-75,375,-225
90,300,0,75,75,375,-225

hth, this is for Revit, but it will also work in AutoCAD.
