Recap Photo for Educational Use and In General

Recap Photo for Educational Use and In General

I am currently a student and we are learning how to use photogrammetry. Last semester, we used Remake for a photogrammetry project and we loved it. Now we are doing another photogrammetry project with Recap but as part of a mock-up game to see how it all works together. I am confused as to why I
only have 6 credits left (started with 40 or so) and still have 7/8 of the cloud storage left. I used up my 3 projects allotted trying to do one photogrammetry object with some mistakes, as I am learning, and now I'm stuck without the ability to take another crack at it.

I think that it would be better for students that are trying to learn more about photogrammetry to either have more tries (like a 3 month unlimited projects with 10 GB of space) or the ability to use Remake and not be forced to install Recap so the whole credit/number of projects problem won't exist. Basically, with all of the failing going on or even testing out all of the options that are available to see what the differences are, I think that it would be better to let us experiment with it in all of its glory without these limitations. Then we will be able to appreciate the sophistication of the software.

Also, on another note, I'm not too pleased with how much more time it takes to create the model. I wish that there was still the option to just do it on my local computer instead of having to upload and all of that. If you wanted to keep some kind of credit system linked to our accounts and force upload a copy of the project to the cloud, then whatever. But it takes forever for me to upload and wait until the model is composed. It literally takes 5+ times longer than doing it locally. It's kind of a waste of time to wait, especially when the process is already long enough to begin with.

I'm not trying to be harsh or anything. I just believe in the hands on experience that we need to try to understand what is going on and what we need to do, and also in the efficiency of the entire process of this method of creating mesh.

Thanks for your time,

Mark

One comment to make is there will be some kind of restriction on student use (it shouldn't be on cloud credits though; are you using EDU or trial license for this?).

I'm sure you would agree paying commercial users shouldn't be waiting in the queue as students try to run everything in full-on "ultra mode" settings.  So any kind of unlimited use, time limited or no, isn't going to be likely.

Yes, I'm in a trial license with ReCap Photo, but I am on a student license with ReCap Pro. And I've been trying to get Remake to work like it says in the forums, but it keeps forcing me to update to the newest version of Remake (even after re-installing). Then it forces me to update again, which ends up installing ReCap Pro, which I can't use anymore. This is my real life forever loop.

I agree with the commercial users point. But with Remake, we didn't have to use your hardware and our less-than-awesome internet speed to make a model. We used our own hardware, didn't have to wait forever, and somehow putting it back to that would solve the commercial users queue part.

Disclaimer: These are just ideas that are running through my head as I'm typing and are all theoretical because I don't know if this would conflict with anything that Autodesk feels like they need do or keep protected or protocols or whatever. So feel free to shut these down.

An alternative (possibly for everyone) would be to keep track of their credits that they have available (in the top right corner maybe? by the username) and allow the user to choose if they want to use their own system to produce the model or your system in a queue. Then after they accept the job to get it to start creating the model, it subtracts the credits from their account that is being tallied server-side and reported back to their desktop whether or not if they used your system. Then the education users could get a certain number that would be appropriate (could even be so many a month -> like 10-15 tries (120-180 credits) ) and the tally system could still be in effect for them as well but then they won't be totally restricted and it'll keep your systems open for people that need/want to use your system that are commercial users.

Or if the student licensed versions had to do it on their own hardware without the option of doing it through the queue. Then the queue stays open for only the paying people. So, somewhere in your code, the program could validate which type of license is linked to it to know if the user would be forced to use their own system or your queue. And that could even be retrieved from the server of what type of account is logged in.

I know that you mentioned that there would be some kind of restriction on student use without cloud credits, but I just used the system that is already in place as an example and the number of credits was an example as well. The time limit of a year (it could even be 6 months and handled by semester) could be another restriction.

But I know that it took me at least 7 tries to get it done well with Remake last semester and then I went through and tried the other settings to see what the difference was and it ended up being around 10. And I'd love to keep experimenting to get to understand the process even better with the limitations of different materials and lighting setups and what type of models that need to be cranked out for games (especially VR's restrictions... ugh).

Thanks for your time again,
