Moving scans by using coordinates

Moving scans by using coordinates

In some cases I load 2 scans together and like to move ons scan away from its origin to a new position. I can change origin in ReCap, but I need scan points to define the axis. I like to change by xyz coordinates (relative to the coordinate system).

This will be useful, when I have scans from the same environment but only with an small overlap. So I can orientate one of the scan to a new position.

I agree. Most of the scans I perform are inside of buildings for renovation work, so I never have a 0,0,0 that I can actually click on.

In order to update to a correct origin to match the project files, I have to go through a majorly time consuming process of defining "dummy" control points, then aligning my cloud to the AutoCAD base file, translating where the control points landed in the project, redefining the control points in Recap, then updating everything.

Alternatively, if I am not sharing the cloud with anyone else, I use the update origin tool in Recap to define the floor as 0 Z Elevation, default Z direction (because of course I trust my scanner's leveling), then update the X direction with the "squarest" feature I can find, usually a wall or a column. Then in AutoCAD I rotate the cloud by +/-90, or 180 degrees and manually move the pointcloud in the X-Y plane to align visually, finally checking the properties box for the project's required transforms to use in other programs.

If only I were able to define the origin by importing a PDF, AutoCAD, or Revit file somehow into Recap, then I could perform the visual alignment before saving and closing the RCP and move linearly through my workflow. This would be a major time savings as bouncing back and forth between multiple programs (in my first example) can be very time consuming. And my alternative method works for me, but if I end up having to share my cloud with someone else, I either run the risk of confusing the hell out of them with transform data or performing the first operation mentioned again.
