Auto-Registration Using GPS

Recap should integrate the "Auto-Registration Using GPS" tool. The FARO Focus X330 has an integrated GPS receiver, Recap should take advantage of this. It would make registration extremely accurate, and Recap could then be used for surveying based applications.

Not sure of the accuracy the internal GPS of the scanner is, but in general, GPS receivers are not accurate to the magnitude necessary for registration.

You're right, but they won't be inaccurate for too much longer.

This is a great idea, but I don't believe we have access to this GPS data at the moment.  I will investigate though.

 

And to be clear, this won't affect the accuracy of the registration itself, but would help in two ways:

  - Much faster auto-reg, since we already have rough estimates for scan positions

  - Easier (and maybe more accurate) positioning to final coordinates

If the GPS data is used to place the scans relative to one another for initial placement then it can be useful. How does faro scene use the gps and compass data that a big scene registers more accurately with the GPS and has problems when we tell the program to not use the GPS and compass?
