Ability to import .blk data to Recap

Ability to import .blk data to Recap

Now that Leica have released the BLK360 Data Manager which allows the user to download the scan data directly to a PC/Laptop (along with choosing the scanner settings, hopefully goodbye iPad) can we please get the ability to import the .blk data files direct into Recap just like any other scan data. We can then register on the desktop.

I don't think they'll do that unless Leica makes a plug-in. They are not going to reveal the RAW data structure to Autodesk. Also they have one leg up on Recap for THEIR product Register 360 ,which by the way is $2000+/yr subscription or permanent $4000+

Also I have yet to successfully download ANY RAW data from our BLK360 using the BLK360 Data Manager stand alone-  by itself. It only seems to work while embedded within their own Cyclone v9.2 or REgister 360 Software product.

I think the native data format of the BLK360 must already be known to Autodesk .. to be able to process the data of the BKL360 in RecapMobile.

I understand from a phone call today that there is "no roadmap by Autodesk" to support the *.BLK format at this time.  Wondering how the rest of you feel about this.  To me this seems ridiculous and short sighted.

I am very very very disappointed with this choice of AutoDesk.
With the current workflow, I can import in Recap ONLY jobs that are on the IPAD (or BLK360 ..from where I then unload them on the IPAD).,
The memory of my IPAD (256 Giga) runs out quickly and therefore I CAN NOT keep many jobs.
If I have to re-import into Recap an old job that I had to delete from the IPAD, how can I do ???
If Recap could also import the .BLK files it would be easier: I download the files from the BLK to the PC (with the Leica APP) and then I settle them down in Recap ..
I hope Autodek thinks back ...

Has more to do with the actual business agreement with Leica Geo systems and the level of collaboration/funding that Autodesk pumped into the project, I think.
I called it the moment I heard the first announcement of the product. On Leica's part , it's a matter of building the base for their flagship scanning software package cyclone. Would even be surprised to see ReCap molder in the dustbin in the next few years and the much more robust (and expensive) Leica/Hexagon Cyclone Register 360, Cloudworx (Autodesk "plugin" ) and Jetstream take the forefront.
Recap will be for virtual scene construction not hardcore engineering work. IMHO

As I said in another post... I, as an Autodesk user, feels disappointed with this matter, because they (Leica and Autodesk) has announced and published a big compatibility between BLK360 and ReCap and is not so. I hope that Autodesk take actions and work in making able Re cap  to import the .blk data files.

I own three BLK360 scanners and would also appreciate the ability to speed up our workflow by importing BLK file format directly in to ReCAP Pro. Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support this forum thread.

As with you all, i am very dissapointed to see that autodesk has still to make comment on whether this is a feature that will be actioned upon in a future release of the software. (In fact I am dissapointed that no comment from autodesk other than "gathering support" has been made to show that this is even on their radar.)

I received an email/phone call from Autodesk today. They confirmed:

1. There is a known defect with ReCap Mobile with images occasionally not aligning correctly. The alignment issues is being archived with no ETA for a fix.

2. Autodesk has confirmed that importing the same data via BLK format & using Register 360 corrects the alignment issue.

3. Other than ‘gathering support’. Autodesk ‘at this point’ confirms that import of the *.BLK into ReCap Pro is ‘not on Autodesk’s roadmap’

I have no words that can adequately describe my disappointment adequately. The lack of any Autodesk public support leaves me speechless.

Do you import BLK?
..but why ???
You realize in Autopdesk that it is not possible to work only with the projects stored on the Ipad !!!
..and if tomorrow I have to rebuild a project and obviously there is no more Ipad as I do ???

It seems that the BLK360 is a toy to make you taste how good 'the cake' of laser scanning .. to then get you to buy something more complete .. imagine an RCT360!

We hope Autodesk, systems quickly image offset .. would be the least 😞

ReCap desktop/laptop should be able to pull the .blk format directly from the BLK360.  It is just another file format.

Regarding sgrisez's comment #2: "2. Autodesk has confirmed that importing the same data via BLK format & using Register 360 corrects the alignment issue."

As of Cyclone REGISTER 360 v. 1.5.0, the image alignment issue is not corrected.

Just found this thread.

Now having a BLK360 Leica, im suprised and dissappointed…

I managed to download the BLK files from the BLK360
Now i just need to import them into revit, as a pointloud.

but found out that I need :
1. Cyclone (Theres not even a trial version)
2. Recap mobile  but then (in my case) i need to buy an Ipad PRO. (ipad air has to litlle memory)

Are there anyway, I can convert the BLK files (now i downloaded them to an USB), without the above roadmap?

Best

You can ask your Leica rep for a trial of Register360?
Or rent a 1 week license from Leica. Not at all ideal, but it will allow you to convert to e57, PTX or PTG which you can import in ReCap then in Revit.

Yes I do think they're coming up with shorter term rentals with software directly from Leica so you can subscribe for a week or a month or a year and then they timeout after that date

Nope... You Will have to buy the iPad.

You can run the BLK360 without the iPad via Pushbutton scanning only. It is very much preferable to run the scanner with the IPad using either ReCap Mobile or the Leica Cyclone Field. ReCap Mobile requires an iPad. Cyclone field can be run on an iPad, not sure if there are other options.

Cyclone Field 360 does not support the BLK360 at this time, but the BLK360 App does. It is a subscription based App though for full functionality. The free version can trigger the scanner and put settings on the scanner. What we really need is someone (ahem Leica) who creates e57 files directly from the RAW *.BLK files. Then you could download quicker through the BLK data manager convert them and import them into recap.
