Hello people ^-^ I would like to start a business soon, and I want to start with Museum objects and historical buildings. Currently I`m using my DSLR / phone camera to capture and create the 3d model with Autodesk Remake and I`m pretty satisfied with the output but I feel I can take it to the next step.
My question is, which scanner should I consider buying if I have the budget up to 20.000$ ? I need them to be colored of course. (I`m looking at Leica blk 360 and Faro focus)
(obvious I would like it if it's 10.000 so I can afford a few thousand on a good computer)
Thank you !

Hello Alex,
Look at the Faro Focus M, it's a "low coast" laser scanner. I don't know if it's already commercialised, but if I remenber well, it will coast about 20.000.
For my part, I have a Faro Focus X130, and it's a very good product. I use it with ReCap and it's perfect !
For the computer, I advice you an Intel i7 with minimum 32Go RAM and mémory SSD.
Good luck with your futur business
Best Regards

Hey ! I just had the chance to look at Faro Focus 70, it was an Expo today 😄 tomorrow I will ask for a small demo.
They said it's around 26000Euro here ..
I`m happy that you ar satisfied with the Faro Focus ! Could you give me a bit of details maybe ?
a) How does it handle with scanning a person ?
b) Do you have to work on the model after ?
c) Does it take 3 min for 360 scan ?
d) is the color good on the 3d model after the scan ?
Also, what do you think about Leica Blk 360 ?

Hi,
- I don't advice you to scan person with this scanner, HandScan are more appropriate for that.
But you can try, i think it's works more or less.
- The treatment is done very well with ReCap and you just have to remove few points. You can also transform in Mesh.
- For the time of scanning, mine doing scan in 1 minute and half, and 5 minutes with colors (with photos 360)
- The colors is very good, and the rendering is beautifull (70M pixels)
- However, i can't give you opinion about Leica, I just try FARO.
I hope that will help you

Thanks for the reply ! Please tell me, what Faro are you using ? I have seen a live demo with Faro Focus x130, and in my budget of 20.000$/Euro is the M70.
Also, you don't recommend scanning people with Faro / Leica ? Why is that ? Because the laser equipped is safe (so they say).

Hi,
I'm using the Faro Focus X130
The laser is safe, i don't recommande you for scan people just because it's more accurate with HandScanner like Artec EVA. But i let you try, that should be work.
Please accept the solution if i answer everything
Thank you

Hi Alex,
I let you watch my project on the Gallery community :

However, you just have panoramics photos.
I can't send you the global project ...
Great day too !

I also currently use the FARO Focus x130, but have reserved a Leica BLK360 as I will be able to cut scan times dramatically and improve the quality of the image capture AND register the scans in real-time on an iPad Pro in the field. Plus, the BLK360 is $16k...can't wait for them to be available (hopefully at the end of this month - June 2017).

Hello from Spain.
I am a happy owner of a Faro Focus X130, for me is the perfect tool.
The range of the Leica BLK360 (60-70 m) is very short compared to the Focus X130 (120-130 m).
I Think that the new leica is aimed to interior scans only.
Dont forget the second hand market. There is a lot of "old" equipments like Trimble TX5, Faro Foscus S series and more that not are the cutting edge but can done a decent job for almost half of the price of a new unit.
Regards.

Hello,
Something I learned while researching the scanners is that FARO and Leica do not report their ranges based on the same metric. The FARO Focus x130 has a range of "0.6 m - 130 m indoor or outdoor with upright incidence to a 90% reflective surface." 90% reflectivity is the same as 90% "albedo".
According to the Leica site, "Based on our many years experience in laser scanning, we spec'd the BLK360 to work in the range from 60cm out to 60meters (2' - 200')...Our specification is based on an "albedo" of 78%, something like a light colored interior wall."
The Leica reps told me (I hope they are correct), that the BLK360 has a range equivalent to the FARO S150
(http://www.iqservices.eu/project/files/pages/537/faro-focus3d-s150-iqservices.eu.pdf)
SUMMARY: The Leica spec is based on something LESS reflective than the FARO spec, therefore one cannot just look at the maximum ranges and make a comparison. That said, I'm still very much learning here, but have looked at the raw data from a BLK360 (an outdoor scan) and know it will perform along the lines of the FARO x130 I have been using that last few years.
