Setting correct units ReCap Pro

Setting correct units ReCap Pro

We use feet and inches for all of our projects and I have noticed lately that after starting a project and setting units to feet and inches the software will frequently revert back to meters not only when opening the project again but sometimes also while the project is still open and being worked on. We import our scans from a BLK360 and create our point cloud model then change the units the first chance the software allows us to. Many times, after the model is created, we go back and add survey points to reference our model. Many times this is when the units will flip back to meters so we return to the model, change back to feet and inches, go back to registration to add survey points and ReCap has switched units back to meters again.

Does anyone else have this issue and if so is there a fix? For us it seems changing the units, saving, closing the software and starting again works sometimes but it seems to randomly stick or randomly change back to meters.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

I recently installed ReCap 2022 hoping that the point cloud unit issue would be resolved, but it still hasn't been! I understand that Autodesk is a global company and most of the world uses metric units. However, in the U.S. Imperial Units are the standard almost all of the time. My example is this: I have a point cloud that was natively collected in US Survey Foot, I save to .rcp/rcs. format with coordinate and unit information set correctly. I open Civil 3D and attached the point cloud and under details Point Cloud Unit: Meter  Why is this happening? If anything the developers should have the default units set to unitless or inherit the units that are set in the project! In Civil 3D 2017 users could import .las files with no problem. Civil 3D 2018 that .las format was gone, forcing users to use ReCap or purchase 3rd party apps to bypass ReCap.

Sorry I just saw this, I have moved on. When I next import into recap I will let you know a detailed workflow. Previously it seems to be working better on my last import back in June was working much better it was an xyz file. I set the coordinates on import. If I recall the project I had issues with was a LAS file.

.pts exports from recap still don’t work.

exported with units set to feet.

pts when brought into any other software is interpreted as feet, but actually are in meters.

results in incorrect size. Everything is multiplied by the conversion factor of 3.281.

issue hasn’t been resolved since 2018. Forcing the use of rcp yet not providing a working or even accurate software, recap is …essentially useless.

it has to do with the actual coordinates in the scan files.
