Does Synergy slow down your computer?

Hello simulators,

Since Moldflow AMI2017, the more I use Synergy, the slower it works and the more it slows down other applications.

I posted an item about this in March 2017:

Speed problem with MPI2017.3 - Autodesk Community - Moldflow Insight

And screencasts like this one:

Pb Slowdown 20170930c | Search | Autodesk Knowledge Network

In 2017, only 8 users responded that they had the same problem.

Since this time, I have changed my computer.

I installed the latest versions of Synergy and of the Jobs Manager.

They were supposed to solve this issue.

Our IT department and our local support tried several things.

But nothing worked.

Now, I notice that:

The more I use Synergy, the less quickly it works.

It slows down all other applications: PowerPoint, graphics displays and even Windows file manager…

By sample, in Outlook, display the mails received or sent is longer and longer. It can take more than 10 s.

My PC is slowed down even when the calculations are finished.

In fact, it is braked as soon as I use Synergy and even if I don't launch any simulation.

When I close Synergy, everything goes back to normal.

Did you have this problem?

Did you succeed to solve it? If yes, how?

Do you still have it?

Many thanks for your replies.

Hello everyone,

Basically, I had the same problems as PascalGosset, both then and now. My internal colleagues have the same problem, nothing has changed in the last few years with both the 2019 and 2021 versions.

Our general procedure is to start the simulation/simulation and once it has been started on the server, we stop the individual Synergy. This at least results in the computer being able to be used for other activities. Whereby it must be said that we perform all larger activities on an extra laptop and switch us remotely to standalone computers in the company on which we start the simulations, which are then in turn calculated on another server.

So to speak, we bypass the performance problems therefore largely (home office conditional)

A solution for the problem would of course still be desirable.

Greetings Lukas

I received this private message from KlausMüller8028:

"Hello Pascal, I also have the problem as you describe it.

As far as the speed of the computer is concerned, it helped me to start the analysis on another computer and then close Synergy!

However, it happens again and again that the results are not completely transferred and the analysis has to be restarted."

Thanks to you Klaus.

In the Autodesk Knowledge Network, they gave this solution:

"Once the job is submitted to the Simulation Job Manager, close down Moldflow Synergy.  Remaining computer tasks should perform at the normal/expected speed again.  Synergy, (and the specific project) can then be reopened immediately."

What to say ?     😞

Hello simulators,

I just took a screenshot to show that my PC is already slowed down by Synergy this morning after 2h30 of use.

However I did not launch any simulation or any meshing.Slowdown 210720A.jpg

Well, to solve this defect, it seems that some people use 1 computer for Synergy and (another one or) a server to make the calculations.

That's an expensive solution. And Synergy slows down my applications event if I don't launch simulations.

Personally, I have an office computer.

Perhaps, laptops are not concerned because their graphic management is quite different.

What are your opinions about this?

I also received a message from Erik Foltz.

He "solved" this issue buying a server for the calculations.

Now, 70 persons read this post and 4 met this problem. That represents around 5% of users.

I received this message from Emil Deveneijns:

"I face the same problem as you described in your post.

  • Yes, I have this problem
  • I didn't succeed in solving the problem. I'm planning to contact my local Molflow support
  • I still have this problem

A bit of background information on how we use Moldflow in our company. We set up the model/simulation in Synergy on our own machine (laptop). And solve the simulation on a remote server. When the simulation is done we analyze the results again on our own machine.

Most of the time I close Synergy when the calculations are running, but when I leave it open it indeed slows my computer down. Also when working in very large models/simulations Synergy becomes very slow (maybe another problem) which results in me spending quite some time with Synergy running on my machine. Resulting in slow down my entire machine. My suspicion was that Synergy was somehow filling up all the (cache)memory on the machine, but it doesn't really show this in task manager.

BTW: a colleague of me has the same problem."

Thanks to you Emil.

I also believe Synergy fills up a memory or something else that all applications should share.

Hi simulators,

At start of simulations, Synergy writes in the job:    Allocating memory for analysis...

Is this could be the cause of our troubles?

Does Synergy does it correctly?

Is it possible to check that?

Could we impose the size and the place used?

Hi simulators,

Since my last message we have tried several things.

In particular, I tested a state-of-the-art laptop: Dell Precision 3561.

I thought it might fix the problem because it works a bit different than a desktop computer.

After a few hours of use, I found that Moldflow slowed it down but less than my current PC.

Lastly I installed AMI2021.2 and unfortunately this version does not solve this problem either.

I just received this message from Stephane Corduan:

"On my side, it's more or less the same ... I've changed the workstation last year and I can still observe some latencies and must reboot the PC one time per day ...."

Not cool...

You can use the above methods to test, which may be helpful to you

Well, I already tested this solution.

It did not work.

As I told before, Synergy slows down my computer even if I don't run simulations.

Lately, it seemed me this problem occurs more rapidly with 3D meshings.

But I'm not sure. I have to check this carefully.

I thought that this had happened only to me. I had the same feeling when I was using the Synergy application.

I even changed my PC to Macbook, but this didn't solve the speed problem, so I tried to computer search for a computer repair near me, thinking that I got a problem with my SSD or network adapter, but after approaching the Laptop screen repair Poole service they told me that the main problem is in software I'm using. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, so now I will look for another service to replace the synergy if there still is no solution. If any of you have a good suggestion on how I can fix it, feel free to contact me in private messages with your advice.
