Direct Part Gating

Hello all -

We are using a DME Gate-Mate nozzle tip where melt flows thru the center of the nozzle, then thru the 3 smaller orifices near the tip end before flowing around the outside and around the tip then into the mold.  I can import a model of the DME part, but am not sure what to do at that point.  Do I need to then model the melt channels and gate at that point?  I've searched the forum but haven't found anything quite like this.  I've attached a drawing of the nozzle.

Thanks for the help,

Mike

Hi @mjsainato,

Thanks for using the Moldflow Insight Forum!

Here is one option with regards to using a DME Gate-Mate nozzle tip to simulate flow around the outside and around the tip and then into the mold:

Instead of bringing in the model tip, you could just model the flow channel and mesh in 3D as a hot runner.

If you have any further questions regarding Moldflow, I would be more than happy to help.

Hello Adam -

I started thinking about that but since it's a divergent nozzle and not a thru hole, I am unsure of how to model the melt channel.  As I show in the attached, part of the gate geometry fills with plastic to act as an insulator, while the other part maintains flow into the mold cavity.  I'm stumped on how to model the melt as part insulator and part melt.  Or would it be better just to model it as a thru hole tip instead?

Thanks, Mike

Hi @mjsainato,

Here is a screencast I have created showing the workflow I used to import the DME Gate-Mate into Moldflow to run the simulation.

Let me know if you have any further questions. and I would be more than happy to help!
